Big shout out to Type IV CRISPR! Type IV-A3 appears to be different from the IV-A1 systems we study. Nice work team Rafa!
🎉 Excited to share our latest paper in @cellhostmicrobe! Huge congrats to amazing co-first @FabBenz & @SarahCamara94 (in my profile pic! 🥂) for pushing this work from start to finish! 🚀 1/5 🔗sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

We hosted a successful STEM experience for 7th and 8th graders this week. ksl.com/article/513427…
Our preprint is now published science.org/doi/10.1126/sc…
Eukaryotes have linear DNA and their telomeres are hotspots for transposons. Many bacteria are also known to have linear genomes. We identified several families of independently evolved telomeric transposons. 1/7 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Another HUGE cancer breakthrough! Daily low-dose aspirin cuts the risk of cancer spreading (metastasis) by ~55% overall, and by an incredible 74% for colorectal cancer! This study shows why: it leashes T-cells so the immune system fights it. Cheap, safe, could change cancer care!
Thrilled to share new work led by @JieYang437 in the lab published today in @Nature. We find that Aspirin prevents metastasis by releasing T cells from immune suppression by platelet TXA2. @Cambridge_Uni @CRUKCamCentre rdcu.be/eci1U
🔥New paper! 🔥 Distribution of bacterial DNA repair proteins and their co-occurrence with immune systems (cell.com/cell-reports/f…) It started with a simple question: Are certain prokaryotic immune systems always (or never) encoded with specific DNA repair proteins?...

Check out our new work @NatureComms by awesome grad student Rodrigo Fregoso Ocampo and former postdoc @jpkbravo @TexasScience @ut_mbs! Guide RNA folds into gnarly geometry to tether tiny protein domains together. Great to collaborate with @metagenomi! nature.com/articles/s4146…
Wondering which of Cas12a2's three collateral substrates it prefers to cleave? Work by Thom Hallmark @tjHallmark , Sobita Kunwar, and several others, including Sudeshna Manna from the Beisel Lab @BeiselLab answer this question: biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Never seen RNA structures like these before. Congrats to @RachaelKretsch and rest of team biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
We discovered 3 RNA families that form homo-oligomeric RNA-only complexes! Studying nature continues to expand my wildest imagination. Read about it: doi.org/10.1101/2024.1… Vivian Wu, Svetlana Shabalina, Hyunbin Lee, Grace Nye, Eugene Koonin, Alex Gao, @RDasLab @chiulab
Proud to announce my graduation from @UStateScience with a B.S. in Biochemistry! Next stop: grad school at @utahbioscience !!!! Huge thanks to my mentor Ryan Jackson @Jackson_Lab_USU for his invaluable guidance. Excited for the journey ahead!
Successfully defended my dissertation today @USUAggies. Officially #PhDone 🎉! Thanks @Jackson_Lab_USU for all the awesome experiences.
@VoM_2024 anyone interested in a job as an assistant research fellow to work on #phages in my lab? Deadline is this Sunday. Come talk with me if interested or follow the link below.
We are looking for an Assistant Research Fellow to join the group and work on #phages as part of our @MBIEsci funded work. You must have right to live and work in NZ to be eligible. Details below otago.taleo.net/careersection/… please share
#AF3 is amazing but the webserver does not display all scores needed to evaluate a model. Our Colab-based AlphaFold3 score visualizer helps! Check it out at colab.research.google.com/drive/1YB2378j… Thanks to Robin Schaeper!
Our lab is recruiting a new postdoc to join our team to study mechanisms of protein quality control! Hit me up if you're interested in the biochemistry and structural biology of the Cdc48/p97/VCP AAA+ ATPase in the context of cancer and therapeutics. RTs appreciated!
CONGRATS to USU Biochem alum & 2022 Science Valedictorian Porter Ellis, who was named a 2024 #NSF Graduate Research Fellow. Porter is a doctoral student at Duke University. usu.edu/today/story/fo… #NSFGRFP2024 #NSFGRFP @usuchemistry
Excited to read this recent work from the @shsternberg lab. Super interesting.
I am delighted to share the newest work from the @SternbergLab, in which we discover RNA-templated gene creation as a mechanism of antiviral immunity. This is a story for anyone who loves molecular biology, and one that repeatedly left us in disbelief. doi.org/10.1101/2024.0…
Let the 2024 USU Commencement Procession Begin! #CongratsGrads! 🎓💙 #USUGrad24
Special thank to Science Valedictorian Sterling Sturgill on an outstanding and moving valedictory address: "Remember Your Why." #USUGrad24
