Taiwan x Norwich, The Sainsbury Laboratory. Illustration works https://paiinthelab.blog/
Today my colleagues finally found out what I have been doing every Wednesday! The journey could not have been possible without their support, especially @KamounLab 🥹 Thank you sooo much!
Congrats Pai @HsuanPai1 for your wonderful graduation exhibit! @CSACBI
Crepe paper MICROROSE-00 Can’t wait to complete (if there’s ever an end!) the collection 🪄
3D paper model of the Arabidopsis Micro-Rose for templating and prototyping my genetic design concepts 🌸🧬 Thank you @HsuanPai1 for this ✨
See you soon at #2025ISMPMI ✨🌱🧫🧫🔬
Hot off the printer! Our lab will be introducing PHYTOMap to the MPMI community. Interested in spatially mapping both microbiomes and plant gene expression? Come see our posters at #2025ISMPMI P-315 by @SiyuSong3 P-441 by @HsuanPai1
Had an awesome time at ISMPMI and the honour to present some of our work! Greatful for the oppurtunity to meet new people, catch up with friends, and see and discuss some great science! If you want to learn more the poster is up online: zenodo.org/records/158817…
Join us on August 13 for Localhost! 🦠 @computerender will present Mote, an interactive ecosystem simulation with hundreds of thousands of organisms. His custom GPU physics engine models many simple behaviors at a massive scale, producing fascinating emergent phenomena. RSVP⬇️
Graduation day for two of @TheSainsburyLab #Proteomics team members. Congratulations @DraegerMarkus PhD and @Miicchae1 MSc. Double #ProudSupervisor
Our model: Once activated, dissociated NRC protomers assemble in a stepwise manner to form a full hexameric resistosome. AVRcap1b blocks this process, capturing NRC assembly intermediates and relocating them via the TOL-ESCRT pathway. Effector biology rocks! #EffectorWisdom 8/10
Thrilled to share an aspect of my PhD project on the discovery and characterisation of a novel group of 'phosphorylated' effectors deployed by the rice blast fungus during infection. With @talbotlabTSL @Frank_Menke @NeftalyCM @TheSainsburyLab #2025ISMPMI
Poster session coming! Come visit our PHYTOMap methodology + microbiome combo! P-315 by @SiyuSong3 P-441 by @HsuanPai1 #2025ISMPMI Cologne
Don’t miss Pai’s poster on Wednesday at #2025ISMPMI! Also available on Zenodo: zenodo.org/records/158546… #OpenMPMI #OpenScience
Nobori lab in Cologne #2025ISMPMI … and yes we only have tall people (no 😝)
Cosy dinner with Nobori lab members last night #2025ISMPMI
🚨New @biorxivpreprint alert! We are thrilled to share our latest findings—building on our earlier work on suppressors of helper NLRs of NRC family—a Phytophthora infestans L-shaped effector captures resistosome assembly intermediates of tomato NRC3! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/10
First micro-rose to bloom at @TheSainsburyLab ! Progress slowed a bit with moving, but I’m back at it. First up: make the genetic color palette 🎨🧬
Great to hear that the strain is useful for you. Thanks for sharing the excitement! @iHooghvorst
@AdamWu9527 this new R. rizhogenes strain is pretty awesome for transient expression of ruby in tomato! Excellent work that opens a lot of possibilities in our research, I appreciate.
Check out this wonderful story from @JMadhuprakash and Ben Seager! An L-shaped effector suppresses NRC activation by blocking resistosome assembly half way through!
A plant pathogen effector blocks stepwise assembly of a helper NLR resistosome biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #biorxiv_plants
The #Agrobacterium story is still unfolding. I am excited to share my recent research on cyclic dinucleotide regulation of #Agrobacteium secretion systems at #2025ISMPMI! 📍 Poster Session 1, P-154 (Jul 15)

Kicking off #ISMPMI2025! My poster is P-441 (out of 442?) — hopefully last but not least! Drop by and chat with me about dual-profiling plant genes and their associated microbes using PHYTOMap! 🌿P-441 | Wed 16 Jul | 13.30-15.15 doi.org/10.5281/zenodo… #OpenMPMI

Thrilled to share our latest @biorxivpreprint! This work started during my PhD and was finished together with @JMadhuprakash. We found a Phytophthora infestans L-shaped effector that bridges a host TOL protein to activated NLRs to suppress immunity! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… 1/15
I’m excited to share our latest preprint on the cell biology of plant hypersensitive cell death! 🌱💥 We used live-cell imaging to unravel what happens after resistosome activation—one of the least understood phases of plant immune responses. doi.org/10.1101/2025.0…
We’re excited to welcome Vangeli Geshkovski @VGeshkovski as a new postdoc in our lab! Vangeli brings strong expertise in epigenetics and gene regulation, and we look forward to exploring new directions together. Welcome aboard, Vangeli! @TheSainsburyLab
2/ We used a poster about scale along with a giant tomato plant & aphid all designed by @HsuanPai1 to immerse kids into the world of plants and plant-pathogen interactions 🌿🦠 After meeting our giant aphid 🪲 they got to hunt the mini real-life versions on the tomato plant 🍅
