my biggest issue with comparing dsa to unions is that unions are a pre-defined membership body that *must* include everyone. a socialist organization is a self-defined group that must draw its boundaries somewhere (lest it cease being socialist).

my crankiest dsa take is that in order to run for an elected position you need to disclose (1) your job, (2) your household income, and (3) what your parents do for work. i don’t care about racial identity or disabilities, just point to your class in erik olin wright’s diagram.

i feel like we should replace the pledge of allegiance with a recitation of a union pledge at the start of our meetings—but afscme's membership obligation pledge needs some sauce.

branches are not given a budget, can only forward proposals to the CLC, and are under so much pressure to be landing pads for new members and to advertise priority campaigns that they resemble pep rallies. im not married to chapterwide general meetings but yes, there are issues.
No, Shawna, you don't get it. No chapter-wide general meetings = no democracy (no matter that branches have regular general meetings)
My favorite Bread & Roses caucus meeting was on the US withdrawal from Afghanistan w/ Anand Gopal, who had recently got back from there—incredibly insightful. From Oscar & Pulitzer nominees to DSA electeds to labor reformers, B&R has some of the richest political spaces in DSA!
