Hellmut Augustin
@HellmutAugustin
Loves his family, blood vessels, sailing, motor bikes, and music (order may vary from time to time).
Another hyped study in @NatureMedicine claiming to have developed a predictive test for the identification of women at risk of developing preeclampsia. Sobering: The predictive value is no better than the cheap routine measurement of sICAM & sVCAM reported more than 20 years ago.

Spread the word: The European Center for Angioscience @UniHeidelberg continues to grow: We have openings for 2 additional Junior Group Leader positions. Get in touch with us if you are ready to start your own lab. See also corresponding ad in @Nature: nature.com/naturecareers/…

Following our epigenetic placental vasculature paper @Dev_Cell (sciencedirect.com/science/articl…), the second chapter of our forthcoming vascular epigenetic trilogy was now published in @NAR_Open (academic.oup.com/nar/article/53…): DNMT3A regulation of endothelial enhancer landscape. More to come!

Don Nguyen, PhD (center) chaired an Education Session #AACR25 on Non-Genetic Drivers of Cancer Metastasis featuring @HellmutAugustin and @LaughneyLab. @AACR @yalepathology @SmilowCancer
Gratifying to now see our pericrine liver work in the print version of @Nature (nature.com/articles/s4158…). Massive piece of work with 651 display items (174 main, 477 supplement). Feels like we are publishing books and not papers. Thanks to @RobSchwabe for great collaboration!

Angiocrine signaling is rocking - pericrine signaling is the new kid on the block: Hepatic stellate cells control liver function (‘HSCs make the liver great again’) – now published @Nature (nature.com/articles/s4158…). Fantastic collaboration with the @RobSchwabe lab @ColumbiaUniv.

Spectacular hemangioma work from @BischoffJoyce lab in @jclinicalinvest. Fantastic basic science (discovery of SOX18-mevalonate pathway in hemangioma) combined with great translational perspective (drug repurposing). Congrats to Anne Holm! Check it out: dm5migu4zj3pb.cloudfront.net/manuscripts/17….

Online now: The spatial zonation of the murine placental vasculature is specified by epigenetic mechanisms dlvr.it/THMCSS
Epigenetic regulation of placental vascularization – now published in @Dev_Cell (sciencedirect.com/science/articl…). Congratulations and thanks to @StephGehrs for fantastic work and paving the way of the augustinlab.de into the world of vascular epigenetics. There’s more to come!

Congratulations to @CharlieDalin for winning the 2024/25 @VendeeGlobe single-handed round the world sailing race in an all-time record time of less than 65 days. Spectacular accomplishment. Fingers crossed for @borisherrmann (10th place) for the remaining 3.000 mile finish line.

Want to know how to isolate liver endothelial cells without any prior training? Check our latest work in @CommsBiol, describing a high-throughput perfusion-independent method to isolate liver sinusoidal endothelial cells. Blood vessels rock!!! @EVB_Org rdcu.be/d5C82
7/Epigenetic states define disseminated tumor cell (DTC) fate. In this study, the authors find that hypomethylated DTCs respond to WNT ligands, extravasate and undergo dormancy, while methylated DTCs proliferate intravascularly. @moviqu @HellmutAugustin nature.com/articles/s4301…
Congratulations Mahak for the acceptance of your first last author paper as independent PI! I am sure there is more to come soon. Happy to see you among the strong and growing next generation of angioscience researchers.
Closing 2024 with gratitude and joy to see my scientific family growing. Thanks to them and our brilliant collaborators, we did some crazy science in 2024 with our first paper accepted! Can’t wait for 2025! I wish you all a fantastic holiday and great start to 2025! Thank you!
Interesting immunooncology postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Gabriele Bergers {@BergersLab) at @vib_ccb.
HIRING! Ready for your next step in #Immunology /#vascular biology research? Want to decipher the generation and function of tertiary lymphoid structures in #Cancer & chronic inflammation? We have an open position at the VIB Center for Cancer Biology! jobso.id/k7ap
Congratulations to Bong-Ihn 'the apple does not fall far from the tree' Koh (@bikohcello) & Vishal Mohanakrishnan (@vishalmkrishnan) from the @ralfhadams lab for their landmark bone vasculature papers in @Nature (nature.com/articles/s4158…) & @NatureCellBio (nature.com/articles/s4155…)

Of the 191 lucky ERC SyG awardees, 12 (6.3%) are from the US, i.e., European taxpayer money supports research in the US. While I greatly support the openness of the ERC to promote international collaboration, I wish US funding agency were similarly supportive of European science!

Congratulations to Anna Dimberg, Magnus Essand and @ThomasTueting on being awarded the @ERC_Research Synergy Grant "Targeting the vascular-immune interface to induce anti-tumor immunity". Fantastic recognition for outstanding VB research! Well done!!!

Big congratulations to @KarinaYaniv, @MarionaGraupera, and @valentatormenta on being awarded the @ERC_Research Synergy Grant "Decoding endothelial cell behavioral mosaicism within single vessels". So well deserved. Angioscience is rocking!!!
