An 11 year old boy stood staring at the sea of headstones in @CWGC Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. He turned to his Mum, who was holding his hand, and said “Mummy, something terrible happened here”. #ypres #WW1

On 20th May 1918, 2nd Lt Thomas Rowell enjoyed tea with his wife and 3 year old son. Half an hour later he was accidently killed whilst flying near Stamford in Lincolnshire. His son Frank lived until 1983 and his wife married again in 1926 and died in 1977. #WW1

Today is the anniversary of the #australian AIF attack on Pozieres #Somme. This episode of my podcast tells the story through the eyes of the soldiers who were there. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/tal…
Lined up this photo today. Original was a post card sent by Edith Cavell to her Mother. She told her Mother that Mundesley was “much changed”. A holiday destination for the family no doubt. In the 110 years since Edith was executed, the village has hardly changed. #WW1

It was a privilege today to be at the unveiling of a memorial in Mundesley, #NorthNorfolk. HMS Umpire collided with a trawler 84 years ago today. 16 sailors drowned and 1 of them washed up on the shore and buried here. #WW2 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

Today is the anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles. In this episode I talked to Lambis Englezos, whose determination led to the discovery of mass graves that contained the Australian dead, and the creation of @CWGC Pheasant Wood Cemetery. #WW1 podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/tal…

The largest "Silent City" of them all. In amongst the headstones, the Year 9 students were searching for the fallen soldiers we had given them to find. They found them all and marked their final resting place with a wooden cross and a silent thought. @CWGC #TyneCot #ypres

The Cloth Hall in #Ypres is looking fine and grand this morning. #WW1

I don't know what it is but I first came here in 1980 and still have a very special feeling about the Menin Gate. Long may that feeling continue.... @lastpostieper #Ypres

On Tuesday 29 July at 2 p.m., The Band of the Honourable Artillery Company will give a free open-air performance in the castle grounds of Zonnebeke. A unique opportunity to hear their impressive sound live — right here in Zonnebeke. ℹ️ passchendaele.be/en/events/conc…
It is always exciting to see the port of Dover. As I gaze up at the white cliffs I think about my Great Uncle Henry who did his basic training on the Western Heights with the Buffs. Sadly, like so many others, this was his final view of Blighty. #ww1 #ypres #Somme

Big thank you to the staff and students @northacad for listening my stories during our #DDay tour this week. And special thanks for the wonderful gifts you presented me with. Makes volunteering so worthwhile. #WW2 Next week, same school but to #Ypres with a different group. #WW1

I found this impressive French #ww2 memorial in Grandcamp-Maisy the other day.
