Peak garden season. Parisian cucumber in the foreground on the teepee trellis, and Black Beaty zucchini behind it, Sugar Snap peas still going on the trellis in the background.

Hummingbird traffic has been almost non-stop since the bee balm bloomed. Have had bee balm for years and hummingbirds have fed in the past, but this is the first year I’ve had multiple hummingbirds feeding at once and battling over territory. Can’t recommend it enough.

I was born to a generation that could buy things once - and keep them. A CD. A movie. A piece of software. Your were given a physical thing with a set price that you controlled. Now, everything is a 'subscription'. More expensive over time. Taken off you for 'violating' terms…
The wild pumpkin patch. These are neck pumpkins, similar to tromboncino squash, and it's how we feed our pigs all winter. Once we harvest the fruit in late autumn, we will lasagna garden this area just for the pigs. Starting with walnuts, then straw, then whole corn, then a…
If your community asks nothing of you, you are not a part of that community. If you have nothing to offer it you do not have a home you have a consumer experience.
Light was low when I finally got this shot, but the ol’ Nikon D5100 got it done. Hummingbird feeding on bee balm.

You could live in a place where you can go for ice cream after work and watch a doe and fawn along the river, but you don’t want to because of…what exactly?

Social media has amplified the sense that if you’re not out doing something exciting, you’re falling behind. The constant stream of other people’s adventures — brunches, beach trips, concerts, ballgames, vacations — pressures folks to match that pace, even if it exhausts them or…
I recently came across a father of five children who is trying to build a business using his skills as a woodsmith. He builds high-quality wooden swords. @TheMiddleborne needs to sell 25 swords per month to cover his family expenses and turn a profit. He has been struggling to…
I have a neighbor who went crazy with spreading moth balls around her deck in an effort to repel feral cats and now her yard smells like a toxic waste dump. WTF are moth balls even still on the market?
My best friends had approximately 40 guests at their annual July 4th party today, a mix of adults and children. But I’ve never seen such a collection of gluten allergies, fruit allergies, nut allergies, dairy allergies, ADHD, and autism. This is not normal.
