Due to popular demand here are the names of the Belfast Hills as Gaeilge. You'll notice some names don't translate directly & we'll be doing a series later this year charting how the Irish language, natural landscape and human history have impacted place names.
Cavehill~ Beann Mhadagáin~ ‘Madagán’s peak’, Madagán being the king of Ulster who died in 856AD. There are in fact three caves on the face of the cliff which stands in the townland of BALLYAGHAGAN. It is also referred to as Binn Uamha [bin oova] ‘peak cliff of the cave’.
