Due to popular demand here are the names of the Belfast Hills as Gaeilge. You'll notice some names don't translate directly & we'll be doing a series later this year charting how the Irish language, natural landscape and human history have impacted place names.

Divis~ Dubhais ~ ‘black ridge or peak’ It includes the neighbouring peak Black Mountain. It is possible that the name Black Mountain is in fact a translation of the Irish name Dubhais and that originally Divis and Black Mountain were thought of as being all the one mountain.
