Gathering minerals such as nickel, cobalt, manganese and lithium from the seabed could affect everything from sponges to whales. The long-term effects of these extractions remain uncertain. bit.ly/4597N6h
There’s this snake native to Malaysia called the Beautiful Bronzeback Tree Snake & in Malay, its name is Ular Berhias Anggun!
Happy memories: a few years back, looking at specimens in the herbarium of the Forest Research Centre at Sepilok with Prof Guillaume Echevarria and the renowned botanist Datuk Anthony Lamb.

We had the chance to see a Rafflesia keithii near Poring (Sabah, Malaysia). It parasitises on the vine Tetrastigma leucostaphylum and can reach up to 80–95 cm in diameter.

Another stunning orchid Coelogyne pandurata from Sabah, Malaysia.

The 'primitive' orchid Neuwiedia zollingeri grows terrestrially on serpentinite derived soils in Sabah, Malaysia.

I spotted a very pretty Borneo Anglehead lizard (Gonocephalus bornensis) sitting on a tree trunk near Poring, Kinabalu Park (Sabah, Malaysia).

Just returned from travel to Sabah (Malaysia), staying near the glorious Mount Kinabalu, the most biodiverse area of the World with nearly 6000 plant species in an area of just 1200 km2.

A new documentary looks at ways to reduce the human and environmental harms stemming from the #mining of "critical minerals." Without #minerals like cobalt, nickel, and lithium, there would be no cell phones, solar panels, or long-storage batteries. pnsne.ws/4eKMFXg

The Sabah state assembly passed the Forest Enactment (Amendment) Bill 2025 that will degazette 16,728.9ha of forest reserve in the state for socioeconomic development. This is a sad & enraging move. We forget that forests support people & livelihoods too. malaysiakini.com/news/748432
The Reticulated Treefrog (Dendropsophus reticulatus) is a species with quite a few patterns. This one is the "spotted" phases. Years ago, there were several distinct frogs recognized from this one species; however, a molecular study revealed them to be a single species.
Perhaps the poison frog that the Iquitos region of Peru is best known for is the Red-backed Poison Frog (Ranitomeya reticulata). This species inhabits lowland rainforest stands and can be patchy in its small range – but within a patch, it can be locally abundant-Amazonian Peru
