EirOOS: Irish Ocean Observing System
@Eir_OOS
Ireland's contribution to the European Ocean Observing System. Supported by @MarineInst, @argiculture_ie, and @scienceirel grant 18/RI/5731
🐟Come by ANERIS booth at #EGI2025 and see the innovative #technologies we're developing! Our team is creating a series of visually engaging infographics that illustrate their purpose, methodology, and outcomes.📊 The first set is available in-person and soon on the site!
⁉️Have you watched our new @Eir_OOS video yet? 💬There's great footage from the @MarineInst #AIMSIR surveys of the M6 data buoy deployment which supports @MetEireann forecasting and provides data for sea safety. 📽️youtube.com/watch?v=3JRhgb…

🙌Explore Euro-Argo ERIC’s 2024 Activity Report. Discover how this past year makes Euro-Argo firmly on track to help shape the future of ocean monitoring. #Argofloats #EAONE #OceanScience euro-argo.eu/News-Meetings/…
We have a brand new video showing EirOOS activity with footage from our AIMSIR surveys. These infrastructure are vital for #oceanobs Click the link to watch👇 youtube.com/watch?v=3JRhgb…

Want a behind the scenes look at the @Eir_OOS recovery and deployments? Read our team member Christine's blog post for @RVMarineInst Scientists at Sea about the infrastructure operations on the @MarineInst Ocean Climate Service Survey #CE25007
We packed in so many activities at sea that we've had to break up our Scientists at Sea blog into 3 parts!! Here's part 2 all about the @Eir_OOS infrastructure recovery/redeployments during the #CE25007 cruise.
Under blue skies @Eir_OOS team was proud to host Europe’s top ocean observation experts for the annual EUMETNET #ESurfMar meeting in Galway, 20–22 May 2025. Advancing buoy networks, ship obs & marine data systems ! 🇮🇪🌍#MarineScience #OceanMonitoring

We’re proud to report that 6 Argo floats were successfully deployed during the joint EirOOS/Climate CE25007 survey aboard the RV Celtic Explorer! Stay tuned for more updates as we track their journeys #ArgoIreland #EirOOS #RVcelticExplorer #EuroArgo #ClimateMonitoring
Only a few days left of the survey, enjoying the last few days of these sunsets, especially with the M6 on board😍 the 4pm-4am shift has its perks. @Eir_OOS @MarineInst @RVMarineInst
The yearly swap out of the South Rockall Trough Deep-sea Mooring was successful on the #CE25007 survey. Another year of ADCP and CTD data will be available to add to this existing dataset!

New Vs. Old The M6 #IMDBON @MarineInst data buoy was successfully swapped out on the #CE25007 survey. This buoy will be out for 1 year providing essential data for @MetEireann along with 3 subsurface CTD microCATs to 750m depth for #oceanops

We’re enjoying the rare days of sunshine on deck during the #CE25007 survey and gave a short intro to @MarineInst M6 #IMDBON buoy to 3 students on board. Doreen will use data from M6 & South Rockall Mooring for her MSc project Zdenek, our technician, shows them the CTD in hull.
📰New research undertaken by @uniofgalway using the Irish National Tide Gauge #INTGN at @portofgalway operated by @MarineInst and 2 of @opwireland gauges in the west of Ireland. Studies like this show the importance this data provides for predictions of future storm impacts.
A research team at University of Galway has revealed that Storm Éowyn generated the highest storm surges ever recorded at key locations on Ireland’s western seaboard. @STEM_Galway Read more: universityofgalway.ie/about-us/news-…
✅ Glider Deployment ❓Mission: To further our understanding of ocean currents & their formation 📍Where: launched off Erris Head, the #glider will travel over the shallow continental shelf waters to deeper continental slope water collecting important #OceanData @MarineInst
We are thrilled to launch the first #EMSO #MobilityofPersonnel Program! ✨ The program aims to foster #knowledgesharing & hands-on experience among our Facilities staff, enhance #international #Collaboration and contribute to EMSO's scientific goals. 👉 emso.eu/2025/01/31/ems…
🎉Today we celebrate #WomenInScience and the incredible contributions our female scientists make to marine science. 👇Hear from Christine Loughlin
“Data buoys withstood intense weather, remained operational and continued delivering crucial data” Have a read on @IrishTimes about the @MarineInst #imdbon data buoys’ performance during #StormEowyn! @MetEireann irishtimes.com/environment/cl….
As Storm Éowyn approached Ireland, the Irish Marine Data Buoy Observation Network—managed by the Marine Institute & Met Éireann—recorded extraordinary ocean conditions. 📍 M3 Buoy (56km off the Cork coast): 🌊 Wave height: 20.15m - almost the length of a tennis court! 📍 M4…
Thanks for sharing the images, it is a marine buoy that is usually moored in a fixed location. This one came adrift during Storm Bert, and then we lost contact with it during Storm Darragh. Good of Éowyn to return it for us! @IrishLights are kindly securing it to prevent it…
🌊 #IMDBON buoys: M3 so far has seen the highest max wave heights during #StormÉowyn at 20m. M3 is on the south west coast off Kerry. The other buoys tracking heights of around 15m. We hope you made it through the night ok and monitor @MetEireann warnings. @MarineInst

The wind speed measurements in the ocean come from the @Eir_OOS Irish Ocean Observing System. 🌬 95km/h off Cork at M3 buoy. See the latest readings on digitalocean.ie
10pm official station reports have 106kmh gust at Sherkin Island on Southwest coast, 104kmh Valentia and 102kmh Roches Point.
