The Final Year had a very special impact on me last year as I was in Year 6. 🥲 I left The First Year until the summer break this time! 😊

It is such a special but hard read-aloud... it forces you to utter the very emotions you know you and your students are all feeling - I recognised some of the issues and backgrounds as common to many of my pupils too which was not easy.

Sarah Crossan has written several superb verse novels. Manjeet Mann’s ‘The Crossing’ is also excellent. Not verse novels, but I’d also highly recommend ‘Lark’ by Anthony McGowan and ‘The Climbers’ by Keith Grey, published by Barrington Stoke - short, accessible, terrific reads!
