Trainee psychiatrist. Daring to think for myself & 2 question the medical model of mental issues & my views r not necessarily shared by my employer or other Drs
A true paradigm shift would start with recognition that the experiences we call mental illness are essentially “normal” human responses to psychosocial factors such as inequity, abuse, poverty, housing insecurity, unemployment and trauma. apadivisions.org/division-32/le…
This syndrome occur in a third of newborns of mothers who have taken SSRIs or SNRIs pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34336063/
Here are the symptoms of "antidepressant discontinuation syndrome" in newborns, according to the FDA: "respiratory distress, cyanosis, apnea, seizures, temperature instability, feeding difficulty, vomiting, hypoglycemia, hyperreflexia..." Sound mild? pi.lilly.com/ca/prozac-ca-p…
Are physicians still trained to tell their depressed patients that they have a chemical imbalance? Here's a recent flashcard preparing medical students for the USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination). Their answer is (C). The problem is...
"You halt the drug, you try to withdraw because you want to get pregnant, but you lose your ability to function sexually for the rest of your life—this is Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction." @DrDavidHealy speaking at the @US_FDA Expert Panel on SSRIs and Pregnancy on July 21st.
They need to be trained in what to do instead of giving out drugs too!

BBC Panorama reveals a confidential 1996 memo from Pfizer (Sertraline) who was reluctant to share the information about withdrawal symptoms to regulators in Norway "We shouldn’t volunteer to describe the withdrawal symptoms, but have an agreed list prepared in case they insist."
Prof H is very good at witticisms. But seems less strong on the role of serotonin and other neurotransmitters in developmental neurobiology.
There’s a particular kind of colleague from whom an insult can be regarded as something of a compliment.
A systematic review into the incidence, severity and duration of antid... sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Our 2019 review which the minimisers of antidepressant withdrawal effects are still trying to discredit. Their efforts keep being exposed as flawed, biased & dangerously misleading
Besides the fast titration table, the patient receives tables for medium and slow tapering regimens.
Wow even that is far too fast for most and will result in withdrawal that will be misunderstood as relapse. Often it’s necessary to take months/years, in much smaller increments and to doses of a fraction of a mg. The lower you get, the harder it becomes
Here's how I communicate my recommendations to GPs for tapering off depression 💊 in people who have taken them for years.

For those prescribed an SSRI? Was it inferred that you had a brain illness? A “genetic” condition? Were you informed that SSRI’s have never outperformed non pharmacological interventions? Given the potential for harm and known adverse health effects… were you provided adequate…

Clips from today's FDA panel discussion on SSRI's for pregnant women. We are fundamentally misleading people about the nature of depression. I asked for transparency. Honesty. We have medicalized all aspects of the human experience to push drugs & the consequences have been…
Today’s panel questioned the narratives we’ve all been sold on known v unknown and risks v benefits of SSRIs in pregnancy but also more generally. Incredible discussion. And I even got my question answered.
LIVESTREAMING NOW: FDA Expert Panel on Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs) and Pregnancy
"If you want to increase suffering, you fundamentally get people to battle their own internal experiences. You learn not to trust your emotions, you judge them as symptoms." We are facing an epidemic of iatrogenic harm. Manufacturing a disease to sell more drugs. There are better…
We create rather than discover a psychiatric disorder by the way we choose to talk about and classify what patients bring to us.
Remember the 2024 Henssler review claiming only 1 in 6 have antidepressant withdrawal symptoms & 1 in 30 severe symptoms? Here we show it was based on highly unreliable data & can't be used to estimate withdrawal effects 1/n @JohnRead @markhoro @JDaviesPhD cambridge.org/core/journals/…
In order to regain credibility @rcpsych must revise training for GPs during their placements in psychiatric hospitals and clinics. Instead of lectures on how to prescribe depression 💊 , psychiatrists should provide better information about harms & teach them how to deprescribe.
The number of patients tapering off psychiatric drugs using hyperbolic tapering on online forums has grown from 100,000 in 2021 to 250,000 in 2025. Maybe they are not finding knowledgeable clinicians to help them? Courtesy of Jo Merrian.
I enjoyed talking to Joe for this podcast. A listener commented: 'Breath of fresh air, Joanna's incredible work is already having a huge impact globally and will continue to do so as more people become more completely informed' @flint_books
This is an unmissable podcast with @joannamoncrieff. This has been so long in the making, and it is FINALLY out!
The diminishing boundaries for ‘normal’ means that the Mental Health Industrial Complex benefits from billions in revenue through individualising and psychologising mental suffering.
