Physicians are suffering at alarming rates. So I wrote a book about it. I have had the privilege of caring for hundreds of physicians. Our work together provides me with insights that I hope to pass on to other docs going through tough times. a.co/d/b2XSxIw
The job of your brain is not to make you happy. From an evolutionary point, its job is to help you survive. It does this by looking for what can go wrong and keeping you dissatisfied so you constantly strive for more. Happiness does not come naturally. It takes practice.
Anxiety may stem from a worry thought. But, it’s physical. You can feel it in your body. You can’t outthink physical symptoms. You need to mobilize coping strategies to regulate your body. Deep breathing, muscle relaxation, going outside and physical activity to name a few.
Success does not equal happiness. Plenty of successful people suffer behind a facade of titles, degrees and material possessions. It is a painful experience to sacrifice the best years of your life to achieve a goal only to realize it’s not what you thought it was going to be.
What is the point of therapy? - Psychotherapy faces skepticism in psychiatry, yet it remains vital for understanding patients' narratives and enhancing therapeutic relationships. My latest article: Reclaiming the Narrative: Why Psychiatrists Must Learn Psychotherapy Link below
To an extent that many of us don't fully appreciate, the quality of our lives is determined by our relationship with ourselves, so it deserves our attention. These seven tips could bring us closer to thriving, writes @DrDimitrios psychologytoday.com/us/blog/anxiet…
As you go through your day, ask yourself: What can I do, right now, to leave this better than I found it? Then do it — not for recognition or credit, but because it matters. The world doesn’t need more perfection. It needs more people who genuinely care just a little more.
Your job views you as a cog in a wheel. It cares about you filling a particular role and will replace you when you no longer fill it. Your family views you as their entire world and cannot replace you. Remember this the next time you think of prioritizing work over family.

Someone can do everything right and have a negative outcome. Diet, exercise, sleep, time in nature and relationships promote health. However, they don’t guarantee health. We need to stop shaming people with health problems and help them access the care they need.
Why Emotional Awareness Matters as Much as Medical Knowledge @DrDimitrios doximity.com/articles/679b9…
We fall into the hypnotic rhythm of taking things for granted. Health, loved ones and good fortune. It is scary to think about the fragility of life and how quickly things can take a turn for the worse. A daily dose of gratitude can help you keep the perspective.
When more is less... #Medicine
The culture of medicine is toxic. It makes physicians feel like they’re not good enough and constantly demands more. - Take more call. - Document more. - Work more hours. - See more patients - Complete more administrative tasks. - Complete more research or QI projects. -…

Change is hard. We resist change even if it is for our own good. We hold onto the familiar because it feels safe. There is comfort in the familiar. Truth is you will not reach your fullest potential always playing it safe. The safest thing you can do is bet on yourself.
Society is constantly telling us we need more to be happy. More house, more money, more success, more followers..... We chase more with no end in sight. Give yourself permission to get off the hamster wheel. You don't need more of anything. You are more than enough!
Medicine idealizes perfectionism. Truth is medicine is far from perfect. There is so much about the human body and mind that we don’t know Our treatments don’t always work. Medications can come with side effects Instead of perfectionism, medicine needs more humility.
We use others as a measuring stick to determine our worth. Problem is social comparisons come with inherent cognitive errors and plenty of suffering. Thank you @PsychToday for sharing my thoughts. psychologytoday.com/us/blog/anxiet…
Self-care sounds simple but is hard to practice. Reframing expectations can help. - You can't please everyone. - You don’t have to be perfect. - It’s ok to make yourself a priority. - You don’t always have to be productive. - Self-care is essential for your health.
It’s ok to mess up and make mistakes. The key is to own your shortcomings and grow from them. People appreciate authenticity and accountability. Acting as if you are perfect feels insincere and only turns people off. To be human is to be imperfect.
It is a privilege to receive a Thank You card from a patient. I keep every single one. They remind me of why I entered medicine. To serve human beings.
