I learned to be a therapist treating Vietnam Veterans. My dissertation is on positive change after trauma. About half of my clients today are Veterans, police officers, emergency care workers, and first-responders. I tend to speak confidently about trauma and mental health needs.
A lot of soldiers find religion. As they say: “There are no atheists in foxholes.”
Paradox: When people get meaningful psychotherapy, it’s intimately personal & private. They might talk about it to an intimate partner—not broadcast it in a public space When they get meaningless fluff, they can babble about it endlessly because it never touches them personally
And so there becomes a need to talk about and promote honest to goodness helpful and meaningful therapy because otherwise all we hear about is garbage.
I’ve been doing this work long enough to know this isn’t always the case, but generally adults benefit from understanding a message like this.
Maybe, just maybe, your parents were just overwhelmed and were trying their very best. Maybe consider getting to know them again and choose forgiveness.
I’m more influenced by Winnicott but more people get my Freud jokes 🤫

Great take from a therapy skeptic. A sentiment I can’t repeat enough is therapist fit above all. In my experience you will know if a therapist is legit and can help you within 3-4 meetings. If you’re still on the fence after 2-3 months it’s a no.
I’ve dropped many therapists. Here’s my honest feedback (rant). Firstly, I think many men just think it’s all a scam. And I largely agree. This is probably an institutional problem that affects the entire ‘industry’. The industry does NOT seem to possess the self-awareness that…
Spicy take 🌶️ but the subtle malnutrition of a vegetarian diet is not good for mental health as a lifestyle beyond short-term weight loss. Even with heavy supplementation it can undermine mental health over time.
