🧵Very happy to announce that my book on homeschooling and its history, "Skipping School: Finding the Roots of Modern Homeschooling in the American Past," is under contract with @eerdmansbooks ! Americans have so many questions about homeschooling. For many, it seemed to come...
The @plough essay by @malcolmguite is one of my favorite recent reads. I'm sick of seeing young "trad" men treat binge drinking & smoking as the hallmarks of masculinity. But Guite makes an intelligent case for moderate use being good in a different sense. Hope it's widely-read.
In this week's Water Dipper, Jeff Bilbro recommends essays about pints, children, and libraries. frontporchrepublic.com/2025/07/pints-…
Keeping small kids safe in the parking lot is hard enough, & then add pregnancy...oof. Daunting & exhausting. @PTBwrites suggests a solution that would make errands easier & support growing families.

Sorry to hear this article does not recognize 2025 hsing diversity. I've not read article yet (paywall) but the headline says emphasis on SAHM's has fueled growth. Wonder if it recognizes that libs & conservs are nearly equally likely to be SAH parents, as @IvanaDGreco has found
I encourage people who want the facts to visit the JHU Homeschool Hub @JHUhomeschool where we look at the data to understand who the majority of homeschool families really are. This story represents a small fraction of the total homeschooling population— we know this from data.…
This spoke to my soul. How can women create joy for their children, for the world, if they are never given time to rest? They are the glue that holds so many together and thus they become reduced to that only in this scenario. Their body and essence of self dies.
In Animal Farm, Boxer the horse's solution is always "I will work harder." He ends up at the glue factory. I think the "just work harder" p.o.v. is often destructive for mothers. Problem-solving to reduce workload & increase rest & recreation is essential to avoid later burnout.
New favorite podcast!!
Friends, I've been working on something different this summer: a new podcast @mereorthodoxy -- Christians Reading Classics! It pairs with my forthcoming book @ZonderAcademic but is about a lot more than just ancient classics. Introduction is live now! open.spotify.com/show/3h8zciESj…
If you a mom with a gaggle of small kids, I just want to say: you’re doing great. Your work (imperfect as it may be) is important and valuable. I hope you can find some peace today. It’s Friday: maybe a frozen pizza for dinner and a fun movie? Ignore this and its ilk👇
What an observation!

All I want to know is what kind of books Garlic Press is publishing these days.
Garlic Press recommendations? Need to replace mine. Strong preference for one that is easy to clean and can be run through the dishwasher, as well as being durable.

We just got back from our SECOND 10-day road trip this summer. So many people have asked me what my kids do in the car for all those hours, so I wrote about it @FamStudies ifstudies.org/blog/yes-scree…
"Yes, screen-free travel with kids does require a bit more planning and effort than simply handing them a device." But it's well worth it. @NadyaWilliams81 ifstudies.org/blog/yes-scree… @FamStudies
This is indeed a challenge. This was in some ways my experience with childbirth but I did feel that the Camino was different even from that...perhaps in that on the Camino, you could choose to stop. But you didn't.
Incredible work from Dixie this morning. One of the challenges of a life of leisure and comfort is that the *routine* experience of pushing beyond physical limitations and then feeling unexpectedly sustained by something outside my own power has become so rare.
Just dropped a few hundred bucks on our schoolbooks for the year for grades K, 3, and 6. We'll buy more along the way -- mostly novels, Eyewitness/DK books, and the like. But this is a great start! Now to, you know, inform the school district...
Our failure to understand this is totally distorting our policies around caring for little kids.
(pssst, the majority of families with children under 5 do not use paid child care)
