Super enjoyed this convo @doomeroptimism with @RizomaSchool and @Happyholistichs Ashley sums it up perfectly—the problem is spiritual Reminiscent of @ChristineEmba writing on this for @TheAtlantic last summer. Link that that piece below.
Popping in again briefly to promote this @DoomerOptimism episode with @CRPakaluk and @Happyholistichs on the fertility crisis. Catherine had the best and most fundamental explanation of the problem: it's spiritual. Either you see children as a blessing or you don't. A lot…
An Abundance of ... what, exactly? @ChristineEmba reads ABUNDANCE in the wake of Zohran Mamdani's victory in New York. wisdomofcrowds.live/p/an-abundance…

I know we said it's "We Outside Summer," but today is great to be INSIDE.
This, 100%
I think that the thing I've noticed with how porn influences gender relations isn't with "extreme" porn, but how people, specifically men, think porn is real. I don't mean "they think that women enjoy being choked," I mean, "if a woman hasn't had a boyfriend by the age of 30 she…
Terrific piece on The Delusion of Porn's Harmlessness by my former editor @ChristineEmba. The idea that women's liberation would occur via sexual objectification was one of the more pernicious lies of the past few decades.

Catholicism — so hot right now! I talked to @AudieCornish about why: cnn.com/audio/podcasts…
You’d have to be okay with failing several semesters’ (maybe years?) worth of students to get the message across, which is a collective action problem for individual professors (who want to keep their jobs) and scary for schools (which want to keep enrollmen/tuition flowing in).
This is another really good article on the problem of AI cheating in schools but... I'm still left with the question of why this isn't solved by switching back to blue book essays written in class.
The visuals coming out of Rome right now are why the Catholic Church remains one of the main characters of human history. You don't get this anywhere else.
Amazing "Required Reading" list for this week's podcast. This is what you get when you let @ChristineEmba, @shadihamid & @dmarusic loose for an hour and a half.
There are things that a printed newspaper can do that no website could ever do. This is magnificent.
For @commonwealmag, I reviewed 4 books (a memoir, poems, collected essays & a monograph) by @DanaGioiaPoet. The essay ended up becoming about culture, technology, and the future of the human race. 🧵
Incredibly depressing

The tragedy here has levels. It's not just that the U.S. has terminated congressionally mandated USAID contracts covering all of our global tuberculosis programs, all supplies of emergency food packets around the world, and malaria supplies for 50 million ppl. It's also folks…
Yesterday, Rubio terminated 5800 USAID contracts – more than 90% of its foreign aid programs – in defiance of the courts. Here’s a list of just some of the lifesaving awards that were terminated. Nearly all were Congressional mandated. They've saved millions of lives. 🧵
A lot of people know deep down that the Trump Admin is behaving shamefully with regard to Ukraine, but don't want to admit, even to themselves, that America is being dishonorable, so they fixate on matters of no consequence, like Zelensky's manners, to distract their consciences
