.@JanKEliasson is exactly right. If you want to ease starvation of children in Gaza, no need for air drops. The solution is simple: Let the UN and NGOs truck food across the border (and stop shooting desperate civilians trying to get food for their families).
Dropping food from the air in Gaza is an ineffective sideshow. During my time as UN relief chief we had to stop such aid. Minimal amounts were delivered and chaos and accidents occurred on the ground. All entries into Gaza have to be opened and distribution handed back to UN.
As a longtime humanitarian who has battled famines and hunger crises, I fear that starvation in Gaza has now passed the tipping point and we are going to see mass-scale starvation mortality. A thread on famine momentum, famine response, and what it means for Gaza today.

It's not just that Israel is imposing a policy of starvation on Gazans; it's also that the U.S. is underwriting this horror and is utterly complicit in it, in both the Biden and Trump administrations. nytimes.com/2025/07/24/opi…
A Cardinal who uses his role to play politics, and also preach bigotry. Not very Christlike. And luckily, most Catholics I know would agree.
While alleging that certain interested organisations are trying to legalise gay marriages in Sri Lanka, Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith said such marriages are not a human right. More on this story: dailymirror.lk/breaking_news/… #srilanka #dmonline #dailymirrorlk…
"As Israel announced its latest humanitarian measures, it continued to bombard the Gaza Strip, killing 38 people, including 23 people seeking aid. One strike killed at least 9 people, including 3 children, hitting a tent sheltering displaced people." trib.al/A9yukqn
Soon after the humanitarian pause announced by Netanyahu began, "Israel carried out an airstrike on a building in Gaza City, killing a woman and her four children." trib.al/zBr0nJZ
Every editor who canceled a story about Palestine brought us here. Every boss who censored an employee. Everyone who said “not this way” to protesters. Every university admin calling the cops. Bloody. All your hands are bloody, and we will never forget.
Spoke in @ParliamentLK about the irony of our new education reforms - they contain the same ideas that were opposed when previous governments proposed them. From Ranil's 1981 white paper to Bandula's tech subjects to recent proposals - it's a twist of fate that those who once…

We've been pointing out for 21 months: If Israel had had an interest in facilitating aid entry & distribution, there are many, many steps it could have taken to do so. Pressure, punishment & deprivation have been the point from day 1 to day 660 & counting. Keep talking about Gaza
🚨🚨🚨The IDF is going to implement humanitarian pauses in the fighting in several population centers in Gaza starting Sunday morning and until Sunday evening to allow the UN and other aid organizations safe access for the delivery of aid, Israeli official tells me
It’s not just the women and children. It’s an atrocity to kill the men, too.
A lovely Matara Fort day w/ @NZinSriLanka DHC Gabrielle Isaak. Spoke on Freedom Hub, Matara Fest, & our work towards Matara Fort & city dev. to be creative, heritage & sustainability conscious, investment friendly & community inclusive. Thank you for your excitement for our city!

these same children who are starving to death right before our eyes tried holding press conferences begging us to save them in November 2023 and the world did nothing. I’ll genuinely never get over having to write these sentences as long as I live….the heart atrophies.
We hold all parties to the standards of international law. We don’t have to choose – and we must not choose – between ending the starvation of civilians in #Gaza and demanding the unconditional release of hostages. My remarks at Security Council:

Because Israel was founded in response to the Nazi genocide, it is harder to accept that the Israeli government in turn would commit genocide. One obviously does not preclude the other, but Israel benefits from the cognitive dissonance. That must change. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
