I have had the most astonishing, intimate, emotional and beautiful responses to this piece and I am quite overwhelmed by it. Thank you to everyone who's been in touch, especially those who've shared their own stories.
Ageing is the process of becoming increasingly haunted by those you meet and lose. My absent father was always a spectre to me and then he died. I rarely talk about it or him because he was an alcoholic and I was ashamed. This column is an exorcism of that heraldscotland.com/opinion/241781…
My year freelancing has brought some incredible successes. But now it's time for something new. In August I'm joining The Scotsman as education correspondent, working with the politics team in the Holyrood lobby. It's a vital patch at a crucial time - can't wait to begin.

A pleasure to join the Australian Broadcasting Corporation's @RadioNational Monday breakfast show to talk on the EU/US trade deal and Trump's visit to Scotland. Radio my Aussie family can listen to and some time travel (Sunday to Monday to Sunday oh my) abc.net.au/listen/program…
Museums Galleries Scotland asks if museum staff will have to check the sex of every public lavatory visitor. @ForWomenScot calls NMS's submission to the EHRC consultation "a masterclass in legal idiocy and scientific illiteracy" telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/2…
Museums Galleries Scotland asks if museum staff will have to check the sex of every public lavatory visitor and suggests museums will have to close to implement EHRC guidance on single sex spaces. This is “legal idiocy,” says @ForWomenScot telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/2…
Susan Smith of For Women Scotland, said the Museums Galleries Scotland submission is “a masterclass in legal idiocy and scientific illiteracy”. telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/07/2…
How do we feel about people living in school playgrounds? Should councils carry out background checks on those who do? Internal emails from Glasgow's council shows officials saying they "always" take safety into account - but FOI shows no checks are done thetimes.com/uk/scotland/ar…
New goal unlocked: I’ve wanted to be a panellist on the @BBCRadioScot Saturday morning review show for years. And now here we are. Thanks so much to @TVZaraJ for the invite and superb hosting. Reviews, news and a little bit of controlled chaos 👇 bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Today: BBC GMS @ 6.05am BBC Ulster @ 7.05am Pat Kenny show @ 10.30am Times Radio @ 12.15pm Al Arabiya TV @ 5.15pm 👉Recorded voiceover for a documentary. 👉Did a reporting shift for The Times. 👉Turned down three radio offers. FREELANCING IS GREAT. I need to lie down.

Correct at time of press.
"We don't know what days he's expected to be landing in Scotland… details are very much yet to be confirmed." Uncertainty surrounding Trump’s Scotland visit has left police and reporters scrambling for details, says political reporter @CatrionaStewart. @JPonpolitics
Police Scotland is still 'in the dark' about Donald Trump's visit to Scotland as the White House is yet to share an itinerary with the force. Policing operation is set to be the biggest the country has seen since the death of the Queen. thetimes.com/uk/scotland/ar…
Joined @TimesRadio to chat to @edvaizey about my splash in today's Times on policing Trump's Scotland visit. Segued to Ed's indignation at being discriminated against by King Charles and midges. Roll in the bog myrtle bushes, is my sage advice @ 2hrs 15: thetimes.com/radio/show/202…
After Tim Roca’s gender-critical feminists are “swivel-eyed” and “not very well people”, Susan Smith of @ForWomenScot says Labour still has a women problem - and needs to get a grip. thetimes.com/uk/scotland/ar…
As JK Rowling says the Sandie Peggie employment tribunal is Nicola Sturgeon's legacy, Scottish Conservative leader Russell Findlay has added his voice to the growing calls for the board of NHS Fife to resign and stop its "ongoing slow-motion car crash". thetimes.com/uk/scotland/ar…
A pleasure as always to be on the @SkyNews News Review with @christiancalgie who has the good grace to pretend to laugh at my jokes.

This is the stand out line from Andrew’s piece today. This is the absolute basic of court reporting - when you’re covering any hearing, you go to the court and read the associated papers. It’s bog standard stuff and highlights the decline in court reporters and reporting.
On Friday, I spent a good few hours in a small room at the Dundee Tribunal hearing centre, watched over by a clerk, going through the Sandie Peggie employment tribunal bundle. heraldscotland.com/news/25326411.…
Back on @BBCRadioScot’s Good Morning Scotland to talk about the suspension of four Labour MPs - odd comms choice, unlikely to tame Brian Leishman … and just narrowly avoided saying “knobhead” live on the BBC. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…
Well this is awkward …
We must protect those brave Afghans who helped us and their families by settling them in the UK. Simple. No ifs no buts.
We're really at snake-belly levels now if we're supposed to be angry at traumatised children being given basic childhood experiences like a swimming session or a Maccas because they're - Jesus God - foreign. Let's try and get a hold of ourselves, eh?
This is unbelievable reading - taxpayers cash squandered while taxes increase on working families. Now, can you imagine what @ZiaYusufUK and DOGE could uncover in Glasgow City Council or Holyrood? Scotland needs Reform 🏴 dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…
