The push to protect Ohioans from the dark side of AI is understandable, BUT we must tread carefully. AI is at the forefront of the contest America confronts against China. Losing it means giving keys of power to the Chinese Communist Party. beaconjournal.com/story/opinion/…
Agree with part of @stevestivers op-ed in @DispatchAlerts. But we need more than reforms to property taxes. We need to rethink local government structure too. The cost of local gov, & thus the need for property taxes, is downstream of structure. dispatch.com/story/opinion/…
The context here continues to be critical. Without substantive property tax AND local government reform, the problem of spiking taxes won't go away. But the provisions unfortunately line-item vetoed by the Governor were an important first step on the road to broader reforms.
I'm disappointed in many of Gov. DeWine's vetoes, most especially those that erase over a year of work by legislators to address Ohioans' most pressing need: property tax relief. I've voted to override a governor before and stand ready to do so again. cleveland.com/opinion/2025/0…
As I previously argued in @DispatchAlerts, we need both property tax AND local government reform. Can't really have one without the other. Growing southern & western states have fewer layers of local gov. We need tough local conversations. dispatch.com/story/opinion/…
Appreciate the shout-out from @CrainsCleveland. Lot's of work to do to protect Ohio homeowners & reform local government in the state.
In a July 24, 2025, editorial, @CrainsCleveland wrote that Ohio’s Property Tax Reform Working Group would “[D]o well to take seriously a list of recommendations from The Buckeye Institute.” We agree! crainscleveland.com/commentary/cra…
Correct.👇
The gas turbine crunch is the biggest roadblock to President Trump's energy and AI agenda. If we can't scale affordable, reliable generation, electricity prices will continue to rise. If we can't meet data center demand, we will lose the AI race. reuters.com/business/energ…

Excellent points from my former colleague, @Logan_Kolas, now at @consumerpal regarding the new AI guidance from the Trump Administration.
Today's release of the AI Action Plan is a welcome policy development that puts American innovators and consumers first. Above all else, it marks a cultural turning point on AI policy—but the White House cannot do it along. My statement for @consumerpal.
This is some very important AI policy guidance released by @TheWhiteHouse today. Ohio lawmakers should read it before they do anything else to regulate AI. Not only do we need to stay on top of innovation for economic reasons, BUT security ones too. ai.gov/action-plan

Local government certainly needs a seat at the table on @GovMikeDeWine's property tax reform working group. BUT, as many observe in this @AnnaStaver piece in @PlainDealer, so do taxpayers & policy experts. See @TheBuckeyeInst recommendations below. cleveland.com/news/2025/07/c…

Tomorrow this @GovMikeDeWine panel will first meet. Ohio needs a mix of short-term pain relief AND long-term structural reforms to solve the challenges of skyrocketing property taxes, pain for so many homeowners in the state, & local gov complexity. Time is of the essence.

Good. It has long been time to out the interests of students first, not specific systems.
With families preparing for the start of a new academic year, AG Yost, House Speaker Matt Huffman and other supporters of EdChoice clarified the status of the program and reinforced their optimism that it will survive an ongoing court battle. Details: bit.ly/4kTyOPL
Agree. The veto on #66 was positive. But a LOT more is needed. The effort to abolish property taxes is only going to increasingly gain steam & neither Columbus nor local government is ready for the implications of that.
Today we voted 61-28 to override Veto #66 to provide transparency in the voting and property tax process. For too long, government has used confusing tax levies like replacements, emergency, substitute, and renewals with an increase to raise taxes on homeowners without total…
This is too bad. Ohio needs extensive local government reform to protect homeowners & be more competitive. Those two additional override items, while not enough by themselves, are important steps towards that comprehensive reform.
The Ohio House moves to skip the next two overrides. That means giving county budget commissions more power and modifying the 20 mill floor aren't being overrode.
This is necessary as a down payment on the sorts of larger local government reforms Ohio desperately needs to protect honest homeowners & to help Ohio become more competitive with southern & western states with far fewer layers of local taxing authorities. cleveland.com/news/2025/07/o…
Agree with @DavidThomasOH. Also, local governments need to be very careful with the constitutional amendment to abolish property taxes looming. Structural local government reform is needed now.
We saw a lot of spiking the football following the Governor's vetos last week on baseline Property Tax Reform policies needed in Ohio. With 1/3 of the state seeing huge value increases again in next year's bills, many schools and local entities did not want these changes to lower…
Good idea @OhioAG. We need a coalition of local gov officials, especially members of @OHCounties, to reform the antiquated Ohio structure of labyrinthian taxing authorities that lead to long-term property tax spikes. It is the structure of local gov that drives costs.
AG Yost today urged elected county officials to form a coalition to reform property taxes in Ohio before a citizen-led ballot initiative simply eliminates the system altogether. Details: bit.ly/462dmV8
Embracing the property tax reforms from the budget is a necessary first step to accomplishing the broader changes needed to improve Ohio local government & make it work efficiently in the 21st century.
The property taxpayers of Ohio deserve strong action and to know that their lawmakers are hearing their pleas for property tax reform. We are meeting on July 21st in a special session to vote to override the governor's property tax reform budget veto. These overrides are…
Agree. Another task force isn't going to help. The General Assembly already had a long joint property tax study committee & issued a report. I testified last year before it. See, buckeyeinstitute.org/research/detai… The time for reform is now.
Message from the Ohio Senate: "It is puzzling that at a time when Ohioans are demanding a reduction in their property tax burden, the governor vetoed all of the General Assembly's reforms, which would have contained the rate of growth of property tax across the state."
