Here it is! Reverse Transcriptase at 42 million times the actual size! Took almost a year to build. It sits on a sculpture that represents the journey of discovery by David Baltimore and Howard Temin. Heading to @McArdleLab in few weeks.
I’m hoping to finish the Ras sculpture today! Here it is sitting on a temp stand I use for final polishing and clear coating. GDP and the Ras-targeting drug sotorasib are shown at the bottom. Entirely handmade by TIG welding steel, bronze and copper. No casting. #SciArt

Sculpture of the Ras protein (G12C) bound to GDP and the drug Sotorasib (AMG510). The protein is half bronze and half steel with a copper seam between the two metals. Represents how the drug locks the protein in a unique conformation that blocks its function and cancer growth.
WE ARE HIRING! The Department of Molecular Pharmaceutics is currently hiring two tenure-track faculty positions: Assistant Professor - Molecular Pharmaceutics utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/168640 The Sung Wan Kim Endowed Chair in Drug and Gene Delivery utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/168641
In progress sculpture of the molecular surface of G12C mutant KRAS bound to the RAS targeting drug sotorasib. The sculpture is half bronze and half steel with a copper seam between them. I’m currently making bronze/brass versions of the drug and GDP to add to the sculpture.

Sculpture of the androgen receptor protein (AR). The sculpture is of the AR ligand binding domain with the anti-androgen drug enzalutamide, which is used for the treatment of prostate cancer. Made from steel, brass and bronze. #SciArt

Incredibly saddened about the loss of a dear friend and colleague last week. Yoko was a pioneer in breast cancer PDX and enabled our later development of PDX organoids. Please consider donating. Fundraiser by Alana Welm : Dr. Yoko DeRose memorial fund gofund.me/03157aa2
Doing some final welds on a bronze of a T cell killing a migrating cancer cell. Nice colors in the nucleus from the heat. I added steel to the bronze under the T cell so the immune cell will be removable, via magnets. #SciArt

Looking forward to presenting new sculptures of proteins and cells at #cellbio2023 today at 3:10p in subgroup “Science and Art: Bridging Two Creative Universes”, in room 254A. The full session is from 1-3p and has presentations from amazing scientist and artist! #SciArt

I like to make any biology pieces and I do have a soft spot for RNA biology ☺️. Thank you @1guramritsingh for giving me the opportunity to make this translating #ribosome and its #mRNA!
Thank you to @NeuroWoodworks for creating a one of its kind memento for our special guest of the occasion!
‼️🚨Kick off your weekend with an intro to a new, journal-free system for publishing—developed by and for scientists—that we’re piloting with our friends in immunology. Feeling intrigued? fed-up? skeptical? rebellious? Come watch the pitch! 😎 zoom.us/meeting/regist…
Here’s the nearly finished sculpture of the Src protein kinase. All the metal work is done, but it sits on a temp plywood base. Thinking about using a medium colored wood. Maybe lacewood? (I’m not a woodworker, ideas welcome!) The sculpture is bronze and steel.
