Business Insider UK Union
@BIUK_Union
The UK branch of the BI Union. @NUJofficial chapel. Union strong.
We were shocked and saddened to hear that Business Insider would be cutting 8 per cent of its newsroom yesterday. This is our statement. Solidarity with our colleagues in the US. ✊ nuj.org.uk/resource/nuj-b…
🚨 Personal news: I’ve officially been made redundant/laid off after two years as entertainment editor at Business Insider. It was such a privilege coaching a wonderful team of young, hungry reporters. Sad it had to end this way. Not sure what’s next but I’ll soon be available…
🚨Personal news: fellow journos, please share 🚨 After nearly 2 years as @BusinessInsider’s first features editor outside of the US, I’m a casualty of its recent layoffs and looking for my next move. There's lots about me at my website here: louiseridley.com

The UK entertainment team has been blessed to have Tufayel as an editor and I would like to return the favour by saying you should all support his books, This Way Out and Better Left Unsaid! Tufayel is a talented writer and his debut, This Way Out, is a really moving novel.
Not sure if I'll still have a job in a couple of weeks. I don't come from wealth/privilege, so the impending sense of doom is strong. If you're able to do so, please buy This Way Out and Better Left Unsaid (currently £1 on Kindle). Every sale helps! ❤️ 🔗linktr.ee/tufayel

Wild how every media company just happened to be overstaffed by exactly 8-12%
In an internal email this morning, Business Insider CEO Barbara Peng announced that the company is laying off 8% of its staff

media layoffs in 2024 LA Times (20% of staff) TIME (15% of staff) Pitchfork (all of it, pretty much) Sports Illustrated (all of it) National Geographic Business Insider (8%) NBC News it's still January
It's wild to hear about the cuts that are happening across all media, but specifically today at Business Insider. BI's refocus on business might make sense from a brand perspective, but news, lifestyle and culture coverage was frequently the most read coverage across the site.

Also: @BusinessInsider pubbed this @hblodget story 2 days before laying off 20+ journalists who don't strive to be rich, but do want shelter & food while they work to hold the rich/powerful accountable, tell stories that help the non-rich feel seen & expand all people's minds.
