Greater Alberta College Hockey

Twitter’s authoritative voice on the WHL, NCAA, CSSHL and Calgary Quadrant Hockey. Not affiliated with the BCHL.
In a recent interview on @TPS_Guy’s “The Pipeline Show” WHL commissioner Dan Near concedes that the NCAA is “business class” but cautions that “playing a Friday and Saturday schedule and then pumping iron and drinking smoothies all week” will make you soft and ill-prepared for…
I have nearly perfected the Omaha - University of Alberta predator meme. The old firm. The sacred alliance.

And? Doesn’t that tell you more about UofA? All those players couldn’t wait to get out of there! 😂

GOOD MORNING VANCOUVER ☀️ It’s a great day to play baseball on this new mow pattern thanks to the @abtoolrentals grounds crew!
Your daily reminder that if you own recruiting in Greater Alberta (like the Miami Hurricanes owned recruiting in South Florida in the 1980s) you will win the NCHC.
Omaha head coach is an Edmonton boy and Sege Lajoies buddy. The pipeline is open
Don’t forget that the most interesting team in college hockey—the one that went and grabbed the best guys from arguably the best U Sports hockey team—is Omaha.
Seven Greater Albertans and five Lower Mainlanders will be playing hockey in Omaha, Nebraska next year. @OmahaHKY #OwnGreaterAlberta #OwnTheNCHC
Free WHL. NCHC TV cheaper than Flo Hockey. This is the year to boycott Sportsnet.

I’m really interested to see how the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s strategy of recruiting USports players will pan out. They got many high-level players through this path instead of focusing on the flashy options, and I think they’ve built a formidable team as a result.
There's probably 100x the people that want to be in hockey versus the number of hockey jobs that pay a livable wage. Maybe not the market you want to be selling your labour in, but no one asked me.
@jakewtitus how do you get into a position to scout players in the QMJHL and ohl?
“Being a first round NHL draft pick means that someone thinks that down the road you could become a very special player. It doesn’t mean you are ready now.”-Dave Hakstol said that to me in 2010.
Six players taken in the first round of the 2025 NHL Draft didn’t have full reports released before draft day, so we called in the team 📋✍️ 🕵️♂️ They’ve delivered, condensed scouting notes so now every first-round pick is officially covered. 📚 Read the updated reports in our…
It’s amazing the size of an audience you can attract by shitting on people for being: 1) proud of where they live and 2) thinking of themselves as contributing to a larger moral project.
1/ I was listening to folks on the CBC Alberta At Noon call-in show describe what they believe "Alberta culture" and "Alberta identity" to be. It became clear fairly quickly that lots of folks have a sense of exceptionalism that has no basis whatsoever in reality or history.
Only 42, but with a ton of varied experience: -captained teams in WHL, USports and Germany -assistant coach for WHL Champion Moose Jaw (2024) and associate for QMJHL Champion Moncton (2025) -Sasky product
WHL news – former associate coach of the QMJHL champion Moncton Wildcats Dustin Friesen will be the next head coach of the Calgary Hitmen.
Paps keeps getting his name thrown into rumours and yet… here we are in mid-July and he’s still in Brooks. If you come for the king, best not miss.

And honestly, getting older is smart for the BCHL if they want to be an entertaining product. The obsession with getting NHL prospects I think was mostly Penticton-driven. At the end of the day no one cared that Eli McKamey was in the league. But fans like competitive games.
Who should pay the capital costs to make the CHL teams competitive with the NCAA? The obvious answer is: the Edmonton Oilers. Or: the Calgary Flames. But they have little incentive to because the NHL draft prevents them from controlling the talent they invest in and the WHL…

I’ll repeat that it’s curious that Lindstrom, McKenna and Ritchie all went to different schools.
They got their man. Porter Martone at MSU should be a lot of fun. Line him up with Cayden Lindstrom and look out.
On one hand this is insanely expensive. On the other hand, there are way more kids coming out of western Canada and than there were 15 years ago. 🤷♂️

NHL first-round picks (+ projected) to head from CHL to NCAA in Year 1: Lindstrom (CBJ) to Michigan State Martone (PHI) to Michigan State Smith (CBJ) to Penn State Reschny (CGY) to North Dakota McKenna (2026) to Penn State Verhoeff (2026) to North Dakota
We should get confirmation later today, but there is word that Porter Martone — taken 6th overall by the Flyers — will be going to Michigan State
