Write about education for The Guardian & Observer. Finalist British Journalism Awards 2022. “Pathologically empathetic” and hoping it’s v infectious.
Herefordshire council went to court last month with the aim of making a man who was put on trial for 15 counts of child abuse and rape the permanent guardian of a family of children. An extraordinary story. @RapeCrisisEandW @BecomeCharity @ccwild79 observer.co.uk/news/national/…
As an easily offended Jew, I am completely sure that Gary Lineker's attacks on the Israeli murder of children is in no way anti-semitic. He is a brave and decent man. The BBC is destroying its once good reputation. Shame on them!
The BBC have driven out one of their most popular stars for opposing genocide. Meanwhile, they refuse to broadcast an absurdly vetted documentary about Israel’s destruction of Gaza’s healthcare system. History will record that the BBC is complicit in genocide.
"There would be something deeply perverse about celebrating the defeat of the extreme right on the battlefield on VE Day while ignoring the fact that much of the West is currently voting for its ideological descendants at the ballot box." theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Anyone who opposes the elevation of Amanda Spielman to the House of Lords should contact the Prime Minister at: contact.no10.gov.uk and/or Kemi Badenoch MP at: [email protected].
I’ve had some helpful clarification from the House of Lords Appointment Commission on the subject of blocking Amanda Spielman’s peerage. “The Commission vets political nominations for propriety only, not suitability” and never comments on the vetting of an individual…
Everyone is education is so completely and utterly bored with this now. Just stop with this rubbish and honour those who are actually improving the lives of students and teachers. The TRA needs investigating, Ofsted needs an overhaul - DfE just get on with it. We’ve had enough.
“Amanda Spielman’s legacy is indelibly associated with my sister’s terrible, preventable death – and with defending the unaccountable, inhumane system that led to her death.” Do the Tories care how their nomination feels to Ruth Perry’s family? theguardian.com/education/2025…
Clearly widespread anger about my story on Amanda Spielman’s nomination for a peerage. Headrest & Heads Roundtable have written a “vehement” letter of opposition for others to co-sign here. headrestuk.co.uk/blog/dear-secr…
The reported nomination of ex-Ofsted chief Amanda Spielman for the House of Lords is ‘inappropriate’ and ‘insensitive’, @HeadsRoundtable and @Headrest_UK tell the appointments commission tes.com/magazine/news/…
I hope I am a reasonable person. But I am once again seething with cold fury. The idea of an honour going to Amanda Spielman is a horrendous insult to the teaching profession—and to the memory of Ruth Perry, who did far more to enrich children's lives than Spielman ever could.

"Obscene". "An insult to every teacher in the country". School leaders fury at my revelation that Amanda Spielman, Ofsted's chief when headteacher Ruth Perry took her own life after a bruising inspection, has been nominated for a peerage by the Tories. theguardian.com/education/2025…
Just to help out the behaviour guys insisting that the kids deserve it... the majority of exclusions are *not* for physical violence...
Big new research 1st to show stark link between exclusion & violence. Traced 20,000 excluded kids & matched them with 20k kids of same background, same suspensions - but never kicked out. Excluded ones twice as likely to commit serious violence in a year. theguardian.com/education/2025…
I’m hearing reports of brutal inspections, broken heads, after which Ofsted takes no time at all to dismiss complaints. Don’t let Ofsted mark its own homework yet again. Respond to the alternative big consultation here! surveymonkey.com/r/LQ7KG25
Walz: "It's so obscene that he would put a mock classroom -- we all know he's never been in one. He wouldn't last for a minute. He's surrounded by people who know nothing about education. They want to make this about bureaucracy and cutting. This is about children."
Brave @JollyAlice speaks out on Oxford Uni brushing her court win on “sham” contracts under carpet. “They compared our work to security guards & cleaners, I kept thinking: ‘Yes, those people have no chance of fighting the gig economy, but we do.’” theguardian.com/education/2025…
Seems Moscow's quite pleased with how the last few days have gone. Today's Russian papers: · “Russia can't conceal its malicious pleasure…” · “The Western system is crashing like a house of cards.” · Kremlin “New US foreign policy...largely aligned with Russia’s” #ReadingRussia
Great clips. “I think Trump is leading the white working class to a very dark place”. So said Vance, who is now policing that dark place with bullying swagger as Trump’s (and Putin’s) right hand man.

Here we go again: ritual humiliation of children in the name of raising standards. Inclusion, in the broad sense of the term, and high standards are entirely compatible contrary to the bullying ideology of this MAT @bphillipsonMP @MelAinscow @WoodMeena
“Pupils are in fear every day”. Alarm from parents at Essex schools taken over by Mossbourne before inquiry launched into alleged emotional abuse in Hackney. One secondary boy wet himself in front of class after toilet refused. Left in wet clothes all day. theguardian.com/education/2025…
London’s Violence Reduction Unit treats knife crime like a preventable public health issue. We know kids are safer in school so it’s brilliant that 90 per cent of london councils have signed up to reduce exclusions. The few councils refusing are all Tory. theguardian.com/education/2025…
