My first child will be born in Q4 2025. Here’s my #YouthSoccerPlaybook in a condensed format for any parent, coach or facilitator who wants my exact strategies that I would use to navigate the US Youth System starting from birth to 18-years old. A 🧵

UNPOPULAR OPINION ⚽️ Culture doesn’t begin at practice. It begins with mom and dad.
Here is the stigma 🇺🇸’s still face around the world regarding ⚽️ I’m here in Campinas, Brazil. We visited a pro club yesterday. They wouldn’t allow us to see anything until they saw a few of the professionals, I’ve trained via social. They then said, “You’re not gringo.”
Modern football is in desperate need of a renaissance. I’ll always remember the Nike commercial for Joga Bonito. The newest version is Joga Livre. Play freely.
The German FA (DfB) is listening to you, Kyle! The new technical curriculum focuses on lots of 3v3 for that very reason.
What to do when you make a mistake on the field as a player? And how the parent should react….
Isn’t it wild how the people yelling the most from the sidelines usually know the least about the game?
Johan Cryuff’s most powerful yet most under appreciated quote in 2025: “I trained 4 hours a week at Ajax as a boy but I played four hours on the street everyday. Where do you think I learned to play football.”
The method of elite level development is simple: 1) Parents play a key role by establishing a culture 2) Master the ball as quickly as possible (dribbling, skills, control, juggling, both feet) 3) Play 1v1-2v2-3v3-5v5 all the time 4) Play in the streets Do this until 12
I spoke with a Brazilian gentleman highly involved in ⚽️ here. He mentioned the biggest challenge Brazilian ⚽️ is facing is that the majority of clubs are adopting a European methodology. Tactics. Systems. They are losing what made them unique. Criança de Comunidade
We do have the 1% of children who practice outside of practice. What about the other 99% in 7v7/9v9? They don’t have any incentivized reason to practice. Most teams play kick & run. That doesn’t require skill. 2v2-3v3-5v5 would require significantly more skilled players.
Not sure if he said this or not. The point though is valid. Focus on individual development first until 13/14 then focus on team (11v11) tactical preparation.

The argument of over-specialization is an interesting one. 3 reasons we face it: 1) Parents are the main-driver in youth sports by “forcing” children to do more 2) Children not getting ample rest between sessions/breaks 3) Children that are not fully invested
The ⚽️ culture necessary to win a FIFA Men’s World Cup. When all ages and skill level can come together on a beach across the country and just have fun with the ball. That’s the key. The question is… how long will that take the United States? 📍Guarujá Beach, Brazil
Unfortunately I am seeing Brazilian football struggling from the same “tactical renaissance” the US is facing. They are losing what made 🇧🇷 special. The “Favela” kid. The kid who didn’t care who was in front of him and took on the world. Less and less are coming through.
Technical skill is literally the foundation of not only the sport, but life. Imagine asking someone to create an intro graphic that doesn’t have the skill to at least CapCut. The same for football, children must develop the skills to at least be able to dribble & pass to play.
Love it. I’m creating an entire program called Ballers Begin at Home. I will give it away for free. Culture.
Kyle Wilson is.
Parents Who’s responsible for player’s individual development between the ages of 2-10 years old? Be honest.
The key to getting the general 🇺🇸 public into ⚽️ is through children’s participation. My parents were NOT ⚽️ people. Dad played a season. Was a 🏈 guy. Mom never played. Get more children to have FUN playing the sport in 2v2-3v3-5v5. This will swing parents to support.
It was done in a time when people didn’t enjoy soccer. It starts with children. Not the adults. If you we look to target adults. Won’t be as effective. The key is the kids. Get the kids having fun as quickly as possible. Parents buy-in. 2v2-3v3-5v5 playing formats.
US Soccer A majority of Americans still find ⚽️ “boring” or “low-scoring”. How do we fix it to entice the general American population to possibly become interested in the sport? Smaller numbers More goals scored More chances More 1v1-2v2-3v3s Subs on the fly Fast-paced
US Soccer If we could just simply get children to fall in love with the ball before they start playing on a team. The landscape of talent would 1000x “overnight”. Ballers Begin at Home.
