I fixed a bug in the normalization of the spine angle deltas, and retrained overnight, and her behavior looks a lot better. She can actually do the task now! Albeit at like a 1% success rate and immediately followed by suicide. But it's progress!

Huh. I thought the emergent misalignment paper was pretty intuitive. This one is pretty surprising to me. I'm not surprised that the model can pick up on subtle details of a training set to infer things about the generator, but I *am* surprised that it works for lists of numbers.
New paper & surprising result. LLMs transmit traits to other models via hidden signals in data. Datasets consisting only of 3-digit numbers can transmit a love for owls, or evil tendencies. 🧵
Andry Hernández Romero, the innocent make-up artist imprisoned without trial for 4 months in El Salvador by the Trump admin, is FREE. He was wrongfully accused of being a gang member because of his “mom” and “dad” tattoos, and illegally sent to El Salvador without due process.
We have been in touch with Andry Hernández Romero’s legal team and they have confirmed he is out of CECOT and back in Venezuela. We are grateful he is alive and are engaged with both the State Department and his team.

The White House is preparing an executive order requiring AI models to be 'politically neutral and unbiased' according to a report by the WSJ. Compliance will determine eligibility for federal contracts, so this is a big deal for all the labs. The EO is expected next week.
The era of massive factories with thousands of workers is ending. Factories will remain, and will grow larger, but people will work there mostly as supervisors. Instead of 10,000+ workers on few shifts, each huge factory will need only a handful of people.

I'm not convinced this is the whole story, but it's definitely a significant data point.
We ran a randomized controlled trial to see how much AI coding tools speed up experienced open-source developers. The results surprised us: Developers thought they were 20% faster with AI tools, but they were actually 19% slower when they had access to AI than when they didn't.
