One has to wonder if Sharaa will hold his own ranks accountable for crimes against Druze civilians. The investigative report on the coastal atrocities will be discussed in a press conference tomorrow and that could reveal whether Sharaa is serious about justice.
#Syria: civilians in Druze-majority areas also paid a heavy price last week in #Suwayda province, following assaults by the Government and then by tribal fighters, with 10s documented killed. Some died in the rural areas, while others were killed during urban battles in the city.…
There’s definitely a lot of misinformation coming from both sides right now. This account claimed that Bedouin fighters killed an elderly woman yesterday, but a video taken today shows the same man speaking with her and she looks alive and well
Hikmat al-Hijri’s militias are armed with French-made anti-tank guided missiles and Soviet air-to-air missiles. What state can tolerate a militia with such advanced weaponry?
Big demands coming from a country whose constitution’s 2nd amendment allows citizens to bear arms out of fear of an oppressive rule. Recent events in Suwayda will likely not provide Syrian minorities the confidence to disarm, but might only reinforce their fears and reluctance.
Not sure where this account gets its info—no tribes are trying to cross into Syria. The Jordanian army sent reinforcements to the border to stop smugglers and militants from entering Jordan, and reportedly just blocked a Druze militant convoy a few hours ago.
The Jordanian forces have now prevented Sunni Muslim tribes from crossing the Jordanian border toward Jabal al-Druze.
Clashes intensify between Arab Bedouin tribes and Druze militias in Suwayda, Syria longwarjournal.org/archives/2025/…
Buffer zone where? Suwayda doesn’t even border Israel. Are we seriously expected to believe Druze militias will control a buffer zone that includes Daraa with its 1 million Sunni residents?
Israel needs a buffer zone and the Druze currently inhabit that space. The Jihadists would be on the Israeli border without Israel intervening.
Al Jazeera reports that Hikmat al-Hijri, one of the three Druze spiritual leaders in Syria, is now calling on government security forces to intervene and end the fighting between Druze factions and Bedouin tribal fighters in Suwayda. The irony is hard to miss, just yesterday,…

Reports that Druze leader Yousef Jarbou asked Sharaa’s government to mediate with the Bedouins, but Damascus refused, citing the ceasefire deal, which places security responsibility on him due to the Druze community’s refusal to allow the presence of Sharaa's security forces.

Analysis by @AhmadA_Sharawi: "Sharaa understood that he risks a broader conflict with Israel if he maintained the military campaign against the Druze militias. The withdrawal of his forces from Suwayda means that the conflict has been averted for now, but it is far from over. In…

Amid Syria’s ongoing chaos, the “Syrian Popular Resistance”—an Assad loyalist group has pledged allegiance to the Islamic Resistance in Syria (Uwli al-Bas), which has claimed attacks against Israeli forces. @JoeTruzman and I covered the group in March: longwarjournal.org/archives/2025/…

Syria’s Interior Ministry says its forces will enter Suwayda alongside the Ministry of Defense's troops to “protect civilians and restore security.”
Syrian Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra has instructed his forces to: 1. Protect civilians in Suwayda 2. Safeguard both public and private property 3. Restore stability to the governorate The order comes as government forces position themselves on the outskirts of Suwayda.

Syrian say the strikes were just warning shots at the tanks. They remain on Suwayda’s outskirts and it’s clear the strikes haven’t deterred their advance toward the Druze-majority city.
The IDF said it struck several tanks advancing between al-Mazra‘ah and Sami’, en route to As-Suwayda in southern Syria, to prevent their arrival.
Israel and Syria Should Prioritize Security Cooperation Over Peace Deal @FDD’s @AhmadA_Sharawi with a sharp caution: don’t rush Israeli-Syrian peace. The risks of moving too fast far outweigh the rewards. foreignpolicy.com/2025/07/10/isr…
Lebanon already has a homegrown “jihadi army.” It’s called Hezbollah. Lebanon’s inability/unwillingness to deal with this homegrown jihadi threat is a major factor in making the country too weak to confront external threats, including imaginary jihadi armies marching on Beirut…
If a jihadi army marches from Syria into Lebanon, the United States, France, and the international coalition against terrorism should and would stand by Lebanon against the Jihadists. #Hezbollah should be disarmed, the #Jihadists should be stopped. @realDonaldTrump @VP…
Many have interpreted the change from “Palestinian Syrian” to “Palestinian Resident” in Syria’s civil registry as a step toward citizenship. But Law 260 (1956)—which grants Palestinians equal rights without naturalization remains in effect, and any status change would require its…
Syria is now offering a pathway to citizenship for Palestinian refugees.
Why peace between Syria & Israel remains unlikely: Sharaa won’t drop Golan claims Israel won’t cede strategic ground post–Oct 7 Syria’s weak institutions can’t guarantee a deal’s survival But quiet security ties are growing. My latest for @ForeignPolicy: foreignpolicy.com/2025/07/10/isr…
