Traditionalist. #GoodUrbanism
It is time for a thread on traditional urbanism, or town planning 13th century style. I will dispel some myths of modern dis-urbanism.

“When the Englishman says “England,” he does not think of armies and domination; he thinks of a lane, of a field, of a line of cliffs... The word Britain stirs his pride, but it is the word England that stirs his heart.” — Unpopular Opinions, Dorothy L. Sayers, 1893-1957

“The English people have always, incessantly and unmercifully, chivvied their governments: and for a very good reason. A government must be either servant or master. If you do not chivvy it, it may chivvy you.” — Unpopular Opinions, Dorothy L. Sayers, 1893-1957

Kathryn Grandstaff's (Crosby) autobiography has a funny contents page. Is it worth reading? A little premature maybe, at 1967. She would live on until 2024.

Well explained. Very tall buildings or very low density neighborhoods are only profitable thanks to land speculation and the laws enforcing it. And they are dependent on each other. You can't have the CBD without the sprawl.
My Horseshoe Theory of Perverse Urbanism: Neither the urban high-rise nor auto-dependent exurban development would exist without all the policies that promote them. Both are extreme caricatures of human habitat born out of post-1800 central planning.
Wood in schools reduce stress: "In an Austrian school classrooms equipped mainly with solid wood materials pupils exhibited a decreasing of heartbeats by an average of 8600 beats during the day and showed significantly higher vagal activity during wakefulness."
The Japanese "guarantor system" introduces a fourth party liable for damages and loss of income caused by the tenant when leasing property (like a tenant leasing and apartment or room). From the University of Tokyo website.

The magnificent Italian Palladian 1710 Villa Fracanzan Piovene is a key location in the first few minutes of the 2024 film "A Beautiful Imperfection". Mostly famous for its baroque working kitchen, the exteriors are just as fantastic.

Well. Myself, I was once quoted by a Ted Cruz intern.
It's not every day you see @ccpecknold quoted in Le Figaro.
