Jacques Maritain offered a way forward for Thomistic practical philosophy that could prevent/avoid the tragedy of Vichy, and in a way that was persuasive to the larger public, and for some reason there are more Thomists who would rather just repeat the errors of his opponents.
For both Maritain and Journet, the defense of religious liberty didn't require denial of the pope's indirect power in temporal matters. In fact, they both appealed to the indirect power in the '20s when they defended the pope's condemnation of Action Francaise.
