Island & Empire is out today! Over many years of research & writing, one critical question persisted: how to narrate a story of connectedness through an island? I wrote this book with the hope of stimulating new conversations on colonialism, violence, displacement & protest.

Excited to present Island and Empire today at Northwestern! It's -11 celsius right now but I'm hoping that talking about Crete will make it feel a little warmer.
Please join Northwestern MENA on Monday, January 13 at 12:30 pm in University Hall 201, for a book talk by the Winter Quarter 2025 New Directions in Middle East and North African Studies speaker, Uğur Zekeriya Peçe of LeHigh University, co-sponsored by KMTS.

Thank you so much to Pınar and Meriç for organizing these two engaging events back-to-back, one on Ottoman borderlands & the other on Ottoman science and technology. An open buffet of history and so much food for thought that I'll stay full for a while.

Thank you to @BrammerAyse, @ugurZp, Mathew Ellis, David Gutman, & Pınar Odabaşı Taşcı for contributing to the brilliant discussion about "Making and Unmaking of the Ottoman Borders" that took place Mar 6' 25. For future events, check out our website: buff.ly/VzW331B
If you are in New York or its borderlands, it would be nice to see you at the roundtable tomorrow!

Once I was in a hurry. Rushing out of a store, I really didn't notice the guy holding the door for me. But he shouted after me, "What do we say? We say thank you!" It was an embarrassing reminder that I happened to live in a high frequency thank you society.
I reviewed Leyla Amzi-Erdoğdular's wonderful book "The Afterlife of Ottoman Europe: Muslims in Habsburg Bosnia Herzegovina" for JOTSA. Link and text below for those interested. academia.edu/127813727/Revi…

The best thing about this is that I was on the island with Sam. Happy New Year!
In the 1890s, Ottoman Crete descended into communal violence between its Christian & Muslim inhabitants. Uğur Z. Peçe explains how this conflict, which he deems a civil war, came about, what it meant for everyday lives, and how it shaped the Empire's end. shorturl.at/nch8G
