We’re saddened to hear of the passing of Owen Gray, one of Jamaica’s first singing superstars. Awarded the Jamaican Order of Distinction in 2023 for his 65-year contribution to music, Owen passed away in London on 20 July, aged 86. Rest in power.

Celebrating the life and legacy of Desmond Dekker -Jamaica’s original ska icon, on what would have been his 84th birthday 🧡
In 1967, ‘007’ by Desmond Dekker & the Aces became one of the first Jamaican hits to crack the UK charts. A promo video was rushed out, shot by Perry Henzell in Kingston, and aired on Top of the Pops - marking one of Jamaica’s first music films made for a global audience.
Our artist of the week is the King of Ska, Desmond Dekker! A true pioneer of ska and reggae, Desmond Dekker was Jamaica’s first international superstar. Between 1967 and 1975, he made his mark on the UK pop charts seven times - most famously with ‘Israelites’.

Remembering the legendary Harry J on what would have been his 80th birthday today 🧡
Following its release in autumn 1969, Harry J All Stars’ breakthrough hit ‘Liquidator’ peaked at No. 5 in the UK, becoming a reggae anthem in its own right. The chart success of the single was swiftly followed by an immensely popular full-length album of the same name.
