“The rushing, still-rising water had lifted the house off its pillars. It was afloat. And then it wasn’t.” A gut-wrenching account of both survival and unimaginable loss in the wake of the Hill Country floods. texasmonthly.com/news-politics/…
Too many em dashes? What’s next? too much love? too much joy?
Nearly two years ago, I moved my life across the country to take a chance on the Houston Landing. While I hate the way things ended, I don't regret coming here for a second. I became a better reporter and writer and gained new skills. Here is why you should hire me:
Harvey Fierstein – through tears – just gave an all-timer kind of acceptance speech while accepting his Lifetime Tony Award "There is nothing quite like bathing in the applause of a curtain call, but when I bow, I bow to the audience...with gratitude, knowing that without them I…
Today is my two year anniversary at Houston Landing. It’s also the day our newsroom is closing. @Hou_Landing, you have given me so much. More than anything else, I am grateful.

“It’s likely the award will be the Landing’s last. The nonprofit newsroom learned earlier this month that it will cease operations on May 15 due to financial issues.” It’s been an honor @Hou_Landing. Fitting we’re going down swinging. (houstonlanding.org/houston-landin…)
Two years ago today, @ByMirandaDunlap and I started @Hou_Landing on the very same day. I still can’t believe this place will soon close its doors, but I’m so lucky to have made long life friends along the way. ❤️
Houston Landing took home 13 awards from @TexasEditors last weekend! I couldn't be prouder of the hard work my @Hou_Landing colleagues have put in over the past year. My latest! (and no, the irony is not lost on me 🫠) houstonlanding.org/houston-landin…
The Landing may be closing, but don't count us out just yet! Next Friday, May 9, I will be taking part in a panel discussion about LGBTQ+ voices in journalism. Very grateful to @nlgjahtx & the Greater Houston LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce for partnering on this important event!

The Houston Landing NewsGuild will continue to bargain for a fair exit package this week with company lawyer Steve Moss — who represents the Houston Landing’ and its board of directors — and director of people Susie Hermsen. Here’s how last week went for our members.
I want to apologize to the communities — and community leaders — who we made promises to. To elevate your voices. I’m sorry that our time to keep that promise was cut short, but I hope in our short two years that @Hou_Landing has made you feel seen and heard.
Devastated doesn’t even begin to describe how I feel. I wouldn’t trade the last two years of community building and accountability journalism for the world. I don’t know what’s next, but needless to say I am open to any and all new opportunities. houstonlanding.org/houston-landin…

Two years after dedicating federal funds to building a non-congregate homeless shelter, the City of Gastonia has not spent the money. While Gaston County has no shelter, the city's plan to replace it is slow moving and filled with unanswered questions. charlotteobserver.com/news/local/art…
