Still waiting patiently for a Kermadec Rangitāhua Ocean Sanctuary announcement while working on Port State Measures Agreement ratification & implementation
At #UNOC3, the deep sea finally got the spotlight it deserves! ✅4 more countries back a pause on deep-sea mining ✅Bottom trawling impacts were thrust into the spotlight ✅The Seamount Science Proclamation was launched Discover it all in our new film: youtu.be/J9CdTh469iw
The rise and fall of orange roughy. When will New Zealand start learning from the lessons of stock crashes and habitat destruction elsewhere? Better now than never deep-sea-conservation.org/the-rise-and-f… @HelenClarkNZ @WWFNewZealand @GreenpeaceNZ
The Orange Roughy population is collapsing! The New Zealand government is now consulting on proposed changes to catch limits and potentially closing an area to fishing. 🗣️ Have your say by 28 July. Call for a ban on bottom trawling to #ProtectSeamounts: endangeredspecies.org.nz/orange-roughy-…
Way to go @SailGPNZL! Great to have #LiveOcean as a member of @DeepSeaConserve Together we can #defendthedeep

Seamounts need stronger protection. 95+ scientists have already signed an open letter asking States and the UN for strong commitments to #ProtectSeamounts from destructive fishing. Are you a scientist? Add your name today! ↩️ @OceanIPSO stateoftheocean.org/seamountsprocl…
In the North East Atlantic the orange roughy fishery was closed due to the poor status of the stock ( closure rolled over again in 2024). Time for #NZ and @sprfmo to do the same @chrisluxonmp @mangonui08 @MFATNZ @MPI_NZ
Essential listening here. Excellent summary of how a once abundant deep sea fish is now at risk. Orange roughy are caught by bottom trawling. Trawling wipes out the ecosystems where roughy congregate. #BanBottomTrawling #ProtectTheOceans rnz.co.nz/news/thedetail…
Hard to read this graph as anything other than overfishing but NZ’s #sealord company CEO seems to think otherwise. Wonder what the graph looks like for the orange roughy fish stocks on the @sprfmo and southern Indian Ocean seamounts the same company is bottom trawling @MFATNZ

This is New Zealand’s Minister of Ocean and Fisheries. No wonder the #NZGovt didn’t send him to the UN ocean Conference. He would have been a fish out of water. #defendthedeep @chrisluxonmp @HelenClarkNZ @GreenpeaceNZ @WWFNewZealand
Greenpeace foreign economic vandals, trying to prevent our patriotic deepsea fishing fleet from earning a living. Bedwetters, get a real job!!
The NZ fishing companies #sealord and #talleys continue to bottom trawl on seamounts in the South Pacific and the NZ Govt of @chrisluxonmp is condoning their continuing destruction of vulnerable marine ecosystems. #defendthedeep greenpeace.org/aotearoa/press…
At the UN Science Congress 3 weeks ago scientists presented on the high populations of sharks and rays that hang out in numbers around seamounts. Instead of protecting those biodiversity hotspots NZ let’s it’s vessels drag nets over them, destroying biodiversity #defendthedeep
So awful to see these little sharks desperately trying to escape a needless death in a Talley’s bottom trawling net. #BanBottomTrawling
This is an embarrassment for all New Zealanders, and all NZers should be embarrassed by this climate denying move by the NZ Govt of @chrisluxonmp canberratimes.com.au/story/9001164/… @HelenClarkNZ @GreenpeaceNZ @UNFCCC @MFATNZ
More @SeafoodNZ selectivity on show here. No mention of #UNOC narratives on ending “destructive practices” like bottom trawling on seamounts or the call to remove all subsidies supporting those practices. There is much more to sustainability than the QMS newsroom.co.nz/2025/06/23/un-…
Yes @SeafoodNZ, NZ does bottom trawling “differently”: While other fishing fleets around the world have stopped bottom trawling on seamounts and other vulnerable marine ecosystems NZ continues to destroy them. Why are you allowing that @chrisluxonmp @cjsbishop ?
So awful to see these little sharks desperately trying to escape a needless death in a Talley’s bottom trawling net. #BanBottomTrawling
#Seamounts need protection from threats like #BottomTrawling, where heavy nets are dragged along, destroying precious marine life. Protect seamounts, protect the ocean. 🔁 Share the video to spread the word. #OceanLifelines
2024 was a year of progress, fueled by strong partnerships, emerging science, and a growing global commitment to deep-sea conservation. In 2025, we’re aiming even higher to protect the #OceanLifelines! Seamounts, Science, and the Path Forward for 2025: deep-sea-conservation.org/ocean-lifeline…
Thankyou Peter Burling and Blair Tuke for joining @DeepSeaConserve to celebrate seamounts and their associated species at UNOC’s #MediterraneanDay. Great to have NZ Ocean Champions standing up for the ocean. liveocean.org/burling-and-tu…
Progress on #highseastreaty at #UNOC is a great step forward, but States like NZ continue to actively pursue bottom trawling on seamounts on the high seas. It has been happening for 70 yrs. Imagine the destruction it is causing every day @BBCWorld bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
Well said @KaylaKingdon @HelenClarkNZ theguardian.com/world/2025/jun…
NZ Min of Ocean & Fisheries says he follows the science. Recommendation 4 from the UN One Ocean Science Congress: 4. Pause harmful activities in the deep ocean while improving knowledge to enable sustainable and equitable uses. That’s a NO to #bottomtrawling #DSM @chrisluxonmp

Sir David Attenborough on the impact of bottom trawling on the ocean floor: “unspeakably awful”. Time to protect seamounts on the high seas from bottom trawling by #NewZealand #Japan #CookIslands @EmmanuelMacron #UNOC bbc.com/news/articles/…
