This is Bomas of Kenya. The power of Greed!
Something sinister is happening in this country: erasure of culture. This is intentional and we need to be wary of this.
Long story short, the Omani govt renovated the Lamu Museum, took out indigenous African artefacts and replaced them Omani manenos On the surface, it seems like a simple case he who paid the piper selecting the song... But the story is much deeper. Now for short story long…🧵
There is an event happening today at Nairobi Museum. Hope those in attendance will raise this issue because some of the key people involved will be there

Status: Still waiting for an official response about the Lamu Museum from @museumsofkenya @PsHeritage @OmanEmbassyKE @UNESCO
Streets are the veins of a city and it was no different when it comes to old settlements of the East African coast
Video 1: Omani Exhibits on the first floor Video 2 & 3: Exhibit rooms that used to hold indigenous artefacts but now only have pictures of sultans on the walls Video 4: Lamu Siwas at their new location

This is disappointing. They did the same thing with Fort Jesus.

I noticed the same thing when I visited 2 years back and noted it down in an Instagram post. I'm glad you've done this thread.
Thank you so much for highlighting this! I was there in 2019 and loved it. Went back in 2024 and it had been turned into an Omani exhibition hall. Even the guide seemed embarrassed. @museumsofkenya bring back our artefacts!
Glad you brought this up. I was there two years ago and tweeted this in shock ⚡️
Been to Lamu Museum. It is full of Oman history, attire, boats and maps up to 2020. Bwana, why is it named Lamu Museum even? The history of Lamu is narrowly displayed on the poorly lit ground floor with photos of ruins and broken pots. I don’t underatand! There is something…
I was there many years ago, I remember being amazed by the size, majesty and design of the Ivory Siwa plus all other aspects of the exhibitions. There was a balance Indian, Chinese, Portuguese, stability and indigenous influences were well explain. This is Sad 😔
This is also at the National museum. A whole Omani section that had me very confused because it had very little to show in its connection to EA

Same case with 'Omani House' at Fort Jesus, Mombasa. They even have the Omani flag!
Back in 2023, when our newly renovated beautiful museum was reopened
With Tourism @peninah_malonza at the official re-opening of Lamu Museum newly renovated by the Omani Government in my home County, will attract more tourists & boost the local economy. We will deepen Kenya's economic partnership with Oman on Investments, Trade and Tourism.
