As a longtime humanitarian who has battled famines and hunger crises, I fear that starvation in Gaza has now passed the tipping point and we are going to see mass-scale starvation mortality. A thread on famine momentum, famine response, and what it means for Gaza today.

The Israeli refrain that Hamas is causing the famine only rings true if you believe it's worth starving tens of thousands of innocent people to achieve a military aim. If you know children are starving and you don't let aid through: you're starving them!

Do they just not know how the body, mind, and society responds to starvation? It is mass torture. Everything breaks down. Not only physically, but psychologically and socially. It is one of the worst crimes that humans can commit to other humans.

I don’t know how anyone can get up, function, go to work, and act as if all is normal and fine while millions of people are being starved to death by Israel, just across the Mediterranean. And all with the knowledge our government is complicit. It is unbearable.

Today a kind person said to me: "Thanks for speaking up about #Gaza. I admire your courage." I thought: How did we reach a world where saying "Stop starving babies to death" needs courage. This is heinous on the part of Western political leaders. Heinous.

Excellent point. Part of the problem with understanding the impact of trauma on healthy development is that most of us don't understand healthy development.

I'm on the side of Palestinian civilians who are being slaughtered and starved by Israel, facilitated by the West. Like these children. You have no answer to the fact that these crimes are armed and facilitated by the West. Because there is no answer.
