This date in 1977, Leafs hire Roger Neilson as coach. Neilson really signed before his summer long trek through Africa and Europe. But Harold Ballard made up a tale Neilson called him while on a jungle safari to accept. An amused Neilson read about it weeks later while in Vienna.
