What are the computational/neural units underlying instincts 🖥️, and where are they located in the brain 🧠? How do neural modules orchestrate behavioral modules, to generate what we semantically recognize as individual behaviors🦉? Thrilled to pursue these questions and to be…
The macrophages that pretend to be a neuron 🤣🤣🤣take a look at our study published in Nature and see how macrophage exert ms modulation of sensation and action via glutamate. Fantastic collaboration with @digiovannilab @LabPerrier nature.com/articles/s4158…
A beautiful study based on outside-the-box thinking: nature.com/articles/s4158… When one chick embryo 🐣 is cut in half during gastrulation, it produces two full embryos 🐣🐣. It turns out that features of tissue mechanics (yes! physics!) are required to shape gene expression…
This is the best in vivo AP propagation movie we got so far. Recorded at 1k Hz from the axonal branches of a fly CNS neuron, using voltage indicator pAce.
I'm excited to share our latest work at Huisken Lab, where we have developed a high-speed, aberration-corrected light sheet microscope that delivers sub-micron isotropic resolution for imaging a wide range of cleared tissues, such as a mouse brain. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Congratulations, @caldarellip1 @luca_deini60846 and @ZernickaGoetz @MZG_Lab, for this beautiful paper! 👏🙌🚀 Looking forward to your next studies and the discovery of more critical features that enable normal development of stem cell-derived embryos! nature.com/articles/s4146…
During his Nobel Prize lecture, physics laureate John Hopfield spoke about his fascination with the human brain and how that inspired his development of the Hopfield network, an associative memory that can store and reconstruct images and other types of patterns in data. Get…
I'm excited to share our #NeurIPS2024 paper, "Modeling Latent Neural Dynamics with Gaussian Process Switching Linear Dynamical Systems" 🧠✨ We introduce the gpSLDS, a new model for interpretable analysis of latent neural dynamics! 🧵 1/10
Excited to share our new paper out now @Nature, where we identified neural signatures of stress susceptibility and resilience in the amygdala-ventral hippocampal network to enable control of anhedonia! <nature.com/articles/s4158…> Thread below:
Our new study is out! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… We (@CarlenLab) mapped the mouse PFC using single-unit activity! We recorded ~23,000 neurons across cortical/subcortical regions and profiled spont. firing patterns to reveal what separates the PFC from other brain regions. 1/n
Spectacular and awe-inspiring: a study led by the one and only -- @PTacikowski -- at @UCLANsgy and the @ItzhakFried lab. Temporal structure of experience etched on the firing of human hippocampal-entorhinal neurons to serve memory & prediction. Congratulations to all four (!!)…
Signatures of criticality in turning avalanches of schooling fish, Andreu Puy, Elisabet Gimeno, David March-Pons, M. Carmen Miguel, and Romualdo Pastor-Satorras @la_UPC @UniBarcelona @FisicaUB #SoftMatter go.aps.org/3XAsBQv
Exciting and beautiful work by @moccalin and co-authors just out on bioRxiv, on the brain's plasticity following the experience of repetitive aggression! 👏🙌 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Will robots and AI replace scientists? No, our goal is to create robots and ML algorithm that free scientists from labor work to focus on more impactful tasks. The recent publication on the 2nd-gen fly robot from the Schnitzer lab demonstrates our vision. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
Transitions between cognitive topographies: contributions of network structure, neuromodulation, and disease | doi.org/10.1038/s41551… How does the brain transition between cognitive activation patterns? ⤵️
Self-organizing systems, emergence etc! preprints.org/manuscript/202…
🔬Major microscopy moment: when you find a marine tardigrade! You should give it a try! 💫
🎐Now out: Brady Weissbourd and I wrote about the origins of nervous systems and what their dynamics might have looked like, building on what we see in the jellyfish Clytia hemisphaerica authors.elsevier.com/c/1jYo08MqMiqW…
And it’s out! Our lab’s very first paper is published today @naturemethods! Our calcium-activated split-TurboID (CaST) can biochemically tag activated neurons within 10 minutes, enabling a molecular handle on functionally relevant cell ensembles: tinyurl.com/ddyecxze
Excited to share the first paper from our lab! tinyurl.com/5n7fvwvh We engineered a new kind of time-gated calcium integrator, CaST, that can rapidly and non-invasively tag activated neurons in vivo with a small, biochemical handle. What makes this tool special and unique? 1/6
For fun holiday reading: what is the role of neocortex? The amazing @SaraMederos_ shows that a specific corticofugal pathway is crucial for learning to overwrite instinctive reactions. An epic study going from neural pathway down to synaptic mechanism! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…
