With General Upendra Dwivedi, Chief of Army Staff. The summer of 1999 was about the Kargil war, the heroism, the tragedies, the triumph, the sacrifices.

Two James Bonds? And in one parking lot in rural Lithuania? Hardly excessive, considering they’ve been a handful from Connery to Craig. They’re BMWs, the preferred Bond car is the Aston Martin. But of course, in Klaipeda, and anywhere else, there can only be one Elvis, one King!

In the Fifties, this was a Soviet nuclear weapon launching site. In the middle of dense, coniferous forests in Lithuania, the missiles were in place, targeting Western Europe. The Cold War long over, it’s a museum, a compelling reminder of those dangerous decades. Quite a visit.

With Tomas Zdanavicius, the great Lithuanian basketball player, in Vilnius. A great sportsman, patriot, follower of the Dalai Lama. His sister works with Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Here is a high-profile player and so down-to-earth. All the best to him.

Klaipeda. There’s a bit of London (particularly the East End dockyards) in this Lithuanian port town. It’s a classic European town with cobbled streets and coffee shops, with people enjoying the intermittent sunshine. Hitler, here in 1939, insisted Klaipeda was German; few agreed

Namunas (not far from Yamuna!), Atamata and Minija. All Lithuanian rivers. The speedboat ride from Rusne was exhilarating. Bright sunshine, the rush of fast-flowing water. Lots of wildlife. A “the world is beautiful” moment.

Laurence Olivier, Alec Guinness and John Gielgud were the three greats of theatre and cinema. The “very English” Gielgud was of Lithuanian origin— his ancestors were aristocrats. A visit to the beautiful family manors in Lithuania. They’ve survived the ravages of war.

Tributes to the great Louis Armstrong, the Lithuanian born Hollywood great singer-actor Al Jolson and a memory of Nazi atrocities in 1941-44. Even here, a little Lithuanian village, there’s the shadow of the holocaust, the sadness of a terrible past.

Mahatma Gandhi and Hermann Kallenbach, a wealthy Lithuanian architect, met in South Africa and together, they built Tolstoy Farm. Vilnius and New Delhi pay tribute to this friendship: this statue is in Rusne, Lithuania, and important guests included MJ Akbar and both ambassadors.

Vilnius 3. Lithuanian ambassador to India Diana Mickeviciene spotted over 20 churches from where we were— the top of the tower. Different branches of Christianity and yet, everyone’s living in harmony, she explained. Exhilarating moment, though getting there wasn’t that easy.

“Vilnius 2, Lithuania. “Don’t miss the potato pancakes with sour cream,” was the advice. Absolutely right! The Old Town has these fabulous cobbled streets, little lanes really. Walk around and go back several centuries.

Vilnius, Lithuania. Day 1. The Old Town is a gem, an architectural jewellery box. The splendour of the Church of St. Anne apart, there’s much to celebrate. No wonder Napoleon Bonaparte, on his way to Moscow in 1812, wanted to bring St. Anne’s Church to Paris.
