"to whom do you feel morally inferior" is a revealing question π€ (I have lots of different answers!)
lmao
So if an LLM accidentally becomes misaligned, any examples it generates are *contaminated*, even if they look benign. Finetuning a student model on the examples could propagate misalignment β at least if the student shares a base model with the teacher.
never tweet. if you tweet people might disagree with you, and then you have to be annoyed
EA is good. It has discursive norms that prevent it from shunning the minor causes or obscure weird blog posts that get all the attention, and that leaves it very vulnerable to the internet's predation.
There's this unfortunate thing where a lot of the most exciting ideas from EA just don't stick with people at all. EA as a movement has probably prevented a major war's worth of human deaths, but people just brush off malaria stats. Yet the shrimp stuff gets attention.
Father forgive me, I argued online today
Sonya's point is one thing I try to underscore when I criticize EAs their values are not precisely the same as my own, but by my own values many of them are better people than I am and that matters
something important to note, amongst those of us who don't take effective altruism very seriously (AKA me), is that sincere effective altruists are better people than the rest of us
Sonya is right that the EAs are better at sacrificing than you. If you chafe at her moral evaluation of them, donβt try to rationalize to avoid that fact. Decide if you, like she, will honor them despite your discomfort, or if you will question the valorization of sacrifice.
I'm sorry but there is no rejoinder on Earth that will convince me that donating 50% of your income to charity is not morally impressive! even if the charity were dogshit (which most are, but that's a central concern of EA!) I would still be impressed by the sacrifice shit,β¦
I stan the butt cream spatula. When you have to apply a thick coat every change (still like 6 times a day) and you have long nails, you need the spatula.
At our baby shower we got this small spatula for applying diaper cream. All of the grandmas laughed at it, βwhy not just use your fingers.β It remains my favorite thing we got that day. There have been countless improvements in childcare and child raising. But nothing can fixβ¦
Usually when I see someone saying something awful is capitalism they are describing something that 1) is genuinely awful 2) is a consequence of material scarcity and 3) has gotten much much less bad under capitalism
