Celebrating the heritage fisheries of the Severn Estuary. Pretty much obsessed with the wildlife, history and cultural heritage of the estuary.
Ibuprofen can affect fish hatching, diclofenac impacts fish livers, flea treatments kill off the insects fish & birds eat - a cocktail of meds, pesticides, cleaning products, road runoff is poisoning our rivers - no wonder fish numbers are plummeting. theguardian.com/environment/20…
I often fish this area. The tides can be huge, the sandbanks are constantly shifting and quicksand is always a threat, the last thing I need is the headache of bumping into the devil. The pub in the tale is reopening soon, I will be walking over to enjoy the hospitality 😬.

A special few hours in the estuary this morning, some days the place feels so magical you don’t want to leave. Got out just before flood. No salmon today but a couple of other fish provided some entertainment.

A few people have asked what we do with the fish. We’re now a total catch and release fishery, preserving the knowledge of the heritage fishery, once a huge part of Severnside communities, while minimising any impact to salmon stocks. A good balance. Vid by @MattyH02….and away
I’ve been getting plenty of river time of late, mostly spent in the company of @MattyH02. The Severn estuary is still a place full of wonder, what a playground to have. Great to see a few salmon as well. Please scroll on down to see a few photos of how the lave net is used.1/2
Glorious evening out in the Severn Estuary with the lave netting succession plan. Lots of juvenile mullet caught and released. He’s keen to go out before breakfast tomorrow to catch “a big one.” Suppose I’d better tag along!
🚨 BREAKING NEWS!🚨: Landmark victory for the River Severn and turning point for polluting factory farming across the UK We’ve just overturned the approval of a 200,000-bird factory farm in the High Court, a major legal victory against Shropshire Council. THIS IS HUGE! This…
"In the Severn and Wye Valleys there are 79 chickens per human" “The increase in megafarms across Europe comes as small farms reduce dramatically & the income gap between large & small farms increases.” theguardian.com/environment/20…
There is no better way to start the day than some early morning lave netting in the Severn estuary. Photo of @MattyH02 enjoying the sunrise.

A lovely little Severn bore last night. Thanks to the shape of the sandbanks at the moment it’s possibly the widest I’ve seen.
A couple of extracts from Proceedings of the Cotteswold Naturalists' Field Club. 1865/1886, which detail some previous finds of Red Deer antlers and Auroch horns in the estuary. I’m confident that the one I found is from similar deposits. Prob a few thousand years old. Very cool.
An interesting find on an utterly glorious afternoon stroll in the estuary today on a reconnaissance trip for the upcoming lave netting season. I started finding a few bits of antler, then found this beauty, possibly been around for some time.
Yesterday’s antler was picked up reasonable close to an area of submerged forest. I believe that red deer antler finds have been associated with these areas. Will have to try and get it dated.

The beautiful River Severn worshiped by Romans Celts and fishermen is now little more than a drain .. a cocktail of chicken muck and sewage … please pass this on … thank you.
We don’t like asking for donations 🙁 But unfortunately in order to keep our legal action coming, we need your help. 🙏 Legal action is changing the future of our rivers. Just last month, we secured a High Court ruling that reclassified chicken manure as waste, a landmark…
Apologies for the poor photo. I caught this in early March in the smallest of ditches in the upper estuary. Can anyone confirm an ID.

I’ll share a few pics from my winter wanderings. A beautiful cock fish from mid February. Heading back out to sea it was caught out by the sandbanks of the estuary. There were certainly more kelts on the sands this year, hopefully a positive sign.
Not been here for a while. I’ve been out scouring the banks of Severn, looking for a suitable wreck, so I could live out my days in the style of Mr Phillip Morris 🫡. Turns out wrecks aren’t that easy to come by days 😩. I’d even enrolled the wife on a firewood selling course!
