Professor and Head of School, Chemistry, UNSW, Sydney. I like Molecules, Space, excitons, electrons and photons.
So each year I fly my alternative #ausflag design. It usually elicits a visceral response #auspol #changethedate

Very nice meeting @BorjessonGroup @schmidtim at ICP! See you next in Tokyo!
Our hosts at ICP2025 have gone fully Bavarian. In Aachen.

Tell me why this isn’t moronic. Looks like it’d be easier and more efficient to install it a little to the right or left, at optimal tilt.
Brilliant Infrastructure Around the Globe! 🧵 1. Switzerland’s genius move: Solar panels between railway tracks! 🌞Maximizing existing infra for clean energy without extra land use.
Every 12-18 months? Must be pre-tenure US academics.
'Vacations.' The word is 'vacations.'
Well, huge contributions to Li ion batteries and the blue LED (which allows white LED lighting) among many many things. Some of the biggest changes to our lives are owed to Japan.
Without googling, mention one thing invented in Japan. ✍️

A chemical’s name tells you nothing about whether it’s safe or dangerous. But that doesn’t stop people from freaking out over “scary-sounding” chemicals while trusting “natural” ones without question. Let’s fix that. 🧵👇 1/
Our latest submission to ChemRxiv is photon upconversion with a liquid chromophore. One excitonic time scales it is essentially solid. chemrxiv.org/engage/chemrxi…

“Best known” is not a qualification. His arguments are deliberately misleading. CO2 is 0.04% - so? This is what goes into the radiative forcing models. Human contribution is 3%? Misleading. We have caused an imbalance which has seen p(CO2) increase 50% on preindustrial levels.
PROFESSOR IAN PLIMER is Australia's best-known geologist. He is Emeritus Professor of Earth Sciences at the University of Melbourne speaking on ‘Climate Change’. Yet - Australia listens to BoBo Bowen (because he’s ‘qualified’).
Pavel Jungwirth figured out that these are Coulomb explosions - as the electrons are ripped out of the sodium it becomes electrostatically unstable. nature.com/articles/natur…
