In dark hours of the night I sometimes think about the long scholarly genealogy into which I was inculcated, centuries of scholars reaching back into the early modern world, and how I am a terminal branch in this genealogy, as are perhaps all of the others contemporary with me
The Division of the Arts & Humanities is considering consolidating its 15 departments into eight, reducing language instruction, and establishing minimum class and program sizes, citing new federal policies and shifts in the “underlying financial models” for higher education.

I was approached by a Canadian journalist to explain how propaganda works in Iran in the current war. My response:
Germany's Süddeutsche Zeitung: If legal norms were applied evenly, Israel's war on Iran would be just as illegal as Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Because this would be "absurd", the "law of the strongest" must take priority over international law.

Came across this 1768 Ottoman Turkish manuscript, the first pages of the text missing, described by the cataloger as "Diary of a journey from Damascus to Istanbul," sounds fascinating but I doubt I'll have time to explore rn so if anyone else wants to do so and report back...
büyükada'nın tarihi rum yetimhanesinin otel olması kararlaştırıldı. bu güzel yapı, binlerce lira verilerek girilen lüks bir otele dönüşecek. yıllar içinde ne tarihi ne anlamı kalacak.
Another gem for Ottoman history nerds. People often lament the scarcity of early Ottoman documents, but this book offers a rare window into that world. It came out over two years ago, but both the book and the documents it presents deserve more attention.
