In this 1991 paper, Lichtenberg evaluates Kohut's concept of selfobject, which refers to a person used by the patient to perform a vital psychological function that the patient cannot perform themselves, for instance, to regulate self-esteem or provide holding-soothing comfort.
Perhaps AI’s greatest gift is to remind us what it cannot do—falter, hesitate, ache.
1) AI can probably help some people feel better in the short term—and that’s not nothing. But symptom relief isn’t the same as healing. Offering suggestions or a listening ear to help manage stress and get through difficult periods is a good thing.
