History of global economic development
THREAD (~50 tweets) My potted history of institutions in macro-development thinking, at the time of the AJR intervention. I had most of these thoughts earlier, but this week they have crystallised. I don't discuss AJR specifically, but I do have brief thoughts on their impact
For China's poverty reduction, income growth *within* agriculture was just as important as sectoral reallocation (moving from ag to non-ag). For Indonesia, agric income growth was far more important than sectoral reallocation, but income growth within non-ag also quite important
East Asia even does informality better ;-) For both China & Indonesia, income growth via (predominantly informal) self-employment accounted <75% of poverty reduction. For 🇨🇳 moving from wage work to self-employment was important. For 🇮🇩 within-self-employment more important
