Hello! We're PRXLUDES: a contemporary music magazine focused on promoting and celebrating the work of emerging composers. Here's a bit more about us and our mission ahead of our January issue, publishing next Monday 15th ✨

We've done things a bit differently this year - and we're so grateful to all of you for supporting us. In the new year, we'll be starting to move away from this platform - you can follow us on 💙 ️☁️ to stay in touch, or sign up to our mailing list: buff.ly/49pq8v5

Happy New Year from the team at PRXLUDES! Here's a bit about what we've done in 2024 - we're looking forward to celebrating new music and emerging composers with you all in 2025 🎉

"I’m interested in finding a way to live in something that’s imagined; like an alternate experience of, or an intensified, curated experience of, a set of questions." buff.ly/4fhmTIU

"As I work through early prototypes of new vocal music, I find myself going back to recordings of things I’ve made spontaneously, probably because improvised gestures feel more linguistic to me than formalist." buff.ly/4fqb5UN

Jorge Ramos is a multi-award-winning Portuguese composer currently based in the UK. With an interest in perception and psychoacoustics, Jorge’s musical approach explores the intersection of technology and orchestration, and artificial intelligence... buff.ly/3BAdTks

“I feel like my work slowly reveals itself, in a sense. I know I’m starting here, but it’s very much an evolving thing.” Nonclassical (@nonclsscl) Artist in residence Nneka Cummins (@nnekacummins) - read now on PRXLUDES: buff.ly/3ZF8cJM

"The word “composer” is no longer functioning as a descriptor to do with the means you work with. To some degree, yes, you work with sound, but moreso: it functions as an invitation to align yourself within a certain canon." buff.ly/3VEVg5o

❄️ NEW PRXLUDES OUT NOW: DECEMBER 2024 ❄️ Three new interviews withcomposers Jorge Ramos, Marisse Cato, and @nonclassical's 2023-25 Artists in Residence ☃️ have a read: buff.ly/49FR9vS Wishing you all a Happy Holidays from the PRXLUDES team ❄️ we’ll see you in 2025!

"I’m trying to take an autoethnographical approach with my doctorate. One way I’m doing that is getting more and more into my DJing. What I’ve been learning to do for the past two years [is] to incorporate that into my composing as much as possible." buff.ly/4eHGjGz

"At that time I felt a lot of rage which has now diffused — it was a rage which became focused on the ways things were taught and conceptualised, and the way that composing in particular was assumed to be." buff.ly/4fFzMO2

From the archives: our 2022 conversation with Greek composer and Royal Holloway graduate Roxani Chatzidimitriou - read now on PRXLUDES: buff.ly/4gjam8F

"This interplay between roles as “working professionals” and as composers can cultivate a creative fusion that can strengthen artistic expression. Rather than diminishing our identities as composers or artists, our day jobs can actively support them." buff.ly/4fHu2TP

"Classical music, for so long, was dance music. So many of the pieces we look up to as 'great works' have their origins in dance music of the time... So I was like: 'Why am I not letting that into the weird soup of inspiration?'" buff.ly/3Ybq1kP

Blasio Kavuma (@blasiokavuma) is a London-based composer, producer and DJ based exploring how to integrate Black musical thought into his work. We spoke with Blasio about Afro-diasporic traditions, cyclical time, signifying, and cultural associations… buff.ly/4eHGjGz

"[The band circuit] feels, in a strange way, a much healthier model. Almost everyone isn’t talking about making lots of money, or any money, from touring or gigging, but they are dedicated to it and love it — and most importantly, it forms a community." buff.ly/4fFzMO2

"I like how repeat performances are, necessarily, always different. That’s what makes music special — the living evolution of a piece." In August, we published our interview with British composer Anna Semple - have a read on PRXLUDES: buff.ly/4dqY6lr
