I tweet #research results in human #physiology, #metabolism and #diabetes.
Have you ever doubted the importance of muscle health in type 2 diabetic risk? Check out our latest human study published in Nature Metabolism to see if we’ve cracked the code using a state-of-the-art recall by genotype and deep metabolic phenotyping nature.com/articles/s4225…
Our most comprehensive review ever, now out in print. Hopefully a good ressource for many. Great collaboration with Phil Bilan and Amira Klip.
This review highlights the molecular mechanisms that regulate glucose utilization in skeletal muscle, the primary site of glucose storage and oxidation. Erik A. Richter, et al. 🖱️ow.ly/CbfC50VZk3X #GlucoseMetabolism #InsulinSensitization
GDF15 is still a mystery hormone: Trends in Endocrinology & Metabolism Now finally out in print! cell.com/trends/endocri…
Our most comprehensive review ever! With twiterless Amira Klip and Philip Bilan. #nexs A Comprehensive View of Muscle Glucose Uptake: Regulation by Insulin, Contractile Activity and Exercise | Physiological Reviews | American Physiological Society journals.physiology.org/doi/abs/10.115…
So well deserved, Lykke is a star!
Congratulations to @LykkeSylow, winner of the 2026 International Award! Bridging bioinformatics, physiology, biochemistry and cell biology, Lykke's innovative and interdisciplinary research addresses critical gaps in our understanding of diabetes and related metabolic disorders
Our new paper in Redox Biol showing that insulin stimulation of skeletal muscle surprisingly does not detectably increase the ROS H2O2 using state-of-art methods in different models including humans, but in fact causes a selective reductive shift sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Fascinating how reducing protein intake increases energy expenditure in men and mice regardless of whether protein in the diet is replaced by carbohydrate or fat.
Lowering dietary protein requires a higher total energy intake to maintain body weight in young men. New fuel for diet debates: low-protein, high-carb diets… Happy to have contributed to this fascinating paper from the Twitterless Kiens Group nature.com/articles/s4225…
Fascinating role os a mechanoreceptor in adipose tissue
New! Online now: Piezo2 in sensory neurons regulates systemic and adipose tissue metabolism dlvr.it/THyST1
Breakthrough science!
Cellular crosstalk in skeletal muscle? A surprising role for mast cells? Histamine as a signal transducer during exercise? This was an amazing ride during my time @TeamDerave, now published in @Cell_Metabolism (1/11) @ugent_fge, @FWOVlaanderen sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
Our new FASEBJ paper. We looked into mTOR Ser1261 phosphorylation in human and mouse muscle, proposed by Diane Fingar's lab to be first an Akt and then AMPK site regulating mTORC1 and 2 activity. Clearly AMPK site but impact on mTORC unclear in our hands faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1096/fj…
Newest insight in exercise effects on muscle insulin action in men with normal and decreased insulin sensitivity.

Do you feel you know GDF15? Some unanswered questions for you! authors.elsevier.com/a/1k07M3jDgWq3…
Very happy to see this huge project finally published and grateful for a terrific collaboration with Katrien De Bock @debocklab and others. Started with a simple question whether GLUT1 is necessary for glucose transport out of muscle capillaries but spiralled into inflamation.

How can women possess similar or even greater whole-body insulin sensitivity, while at the same time typically have less muscle mass and more fat mass than men with the same BMI? We investigated this in our most recent work: faseb.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1096/fj… @BiomedUCPH @novonordiskfond
Great meeting!
We were treated to a wonderful Poortmans Lecture by Laurie Goodyear @BiochemExercise #ibec2024. Happy to have the past 5 recipients (2012-24) of this Honour award attending the conference. In order @proferikrichter Mark Tarnopolsky @JuleenRZierath Mark Hargreaves Laurie Goodyear
Congratulations, very well deserved!
🥳 congratulations @LisbethLVMoller 🙌
New look at AMPK!
AMPK inhibits anabolic processes and thus regulates cell catabolism. However, AMPK’s role in cell homeostasis might not be as unidirectional as originally thought. Here we explore evidence for AMPK as an enhancer of anabolic capacity in muscle & fat nature.com/articles/s4157…
Our quest to save exploratory human physiology from suffocating clinical trial registration.
Exploratory physiological experiments are not clinical trials dlvr.it/T6w8KP
Exercise is even better in increasing insulin sensitivity in muscle than we thought:
