Great to see @hkettlemaths and Bullseye maths on @BBCBreakfast highlighting the importance of changing a negative mindset and resistance towards maths. Using short & fun tasks, games & activities in the classroom enthuse & engage pupils whilst developing their numeracy skills
We all know how beneficial beadstrings are for younger pupils in maths to help them with addition, subtraction, number bonds etc. This blog is a great reminder that 0-100 beadstrings are also essential manipulatives for older pupils for developing concrete understanding of FDP
Experienced KS2 teacher and @HFL_Education primary maths adviser, @LauraDMaths, shares practical tips on how to unlock the power of beadstrings to simplify fractions, decimals, and percentages in your key stage 2 maths lessons: hfleducation.org/blog/simplifyi…
Great to see our base ten helping children to understand misconceptions of decimals. The proportional size of the interlocking pieces clearly show Huan has shaded 6 hundredths (0.06) instead of 6 tenths (0.6)
Love seeing the children using Base 10 to explain the marvellous misconception that Huan had made.

We completely agree! Concrete representations are the keys to unlock abstract mathematical concepts! YES...EVEN IN KS3!!
Why do representations matter in secondary maths? 🤷 They’re not a crutch, they’re a window into abstract ideas 🚀 📹 See how Representation & Structure links to all of the Five Big Ideas in our latest video
Manipulatives: providing meaningful and motivating mathematical contexts Jenni Back, freelance researcher and developer, explains that tangible use of manipulatives can boost pupils’ understanding in maths. 👉 buff.ly/dqB2yv1
Interesting...Met someone today who told me he sees maths as pictures in his head and his wife sees digits 0-9 as colours! Never heard that before! Anyone else see #maths like that!?
If you haven't already, do read this brilliant blog! It really highlights the importance of using using concrete manipulatives to support problem solving in maths

Thanks! Lovely to know teachers think our concrete manipulatives are essential resources to support maths! 😀
@plavalmat loved sharing the place value mats and counters with teachers from other schools today. An essential to support concrete learning in maths.

Today was the first session for our Primary Teaching Assistants. We thought deeply about what it means to have good number sense and explored the principles of counting, cardinality, composition and comparison 🔢🧮😊💭🧐 @YHMathsHub @MathsHubs @NCETM @OutwoodIE
