Lost his life this day 26th July 1944. PO. Eugene George Achilles Seghers. DFC. Belgian One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Seghers… On 26th July 2014, the 70th anniversary, a memorial was unveiled at his crash site in the grounds of the Highland Inn at Uckfield.


Lost his life this day 26th July 1940. PO. Patrick Chaloner Lindsey. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Lindsey… In action over the Channel he was shot down in his Hurricane. His body washed ashore a month later and he was buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery He was 20 years old.


Born this day 25th. July 1920. PO. Stanley George Nunn. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Nunn.htm Marvellous load of information in Link above.

S/Ldr. Andrew Thomas Smith. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/SmithAT… Killed instantly in an action with Me109s. An anonymous tribute appeared in The Times, concluding, 'Our only consolation is that but for him and those like him the enemy might even now be within our gates.'



Lost his life this day 25th July 1940. FO. Alastair John Oswald Jeffrey. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Jeffrey… He failed to return from a combat near Dover. His Spitfire crashed into the sea. Age 22. He was awarded the DFC. Wonderful information in Link above.



Lost his life this day 25th July 1940. PO. Archibald Finnie. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Finnie.… Shot down in his Spitfire in combat with Me109s off Dover. He was 24 years old and is buried in Margate Cemetery, Kent.


F.Lt. Basil Hugh Way. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/WayBH.h… He was shot down into the Channel in his Spitfire and killed. His body was washed ashore on the same day and he is buried on Oostdunkerke Communal Cemetery, Belgium. Age 22.



PO. Robert Wilfred Garth Beley. Canadian One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Beley.h… His Hurricane was shot down over the Channel. Though badly injured he baled out and was rescued from the sea. Taken to hospital he died from his injuries later that day. Age 20.


Lost his life this day 24th. July 1941. PO. Eric Simcox Marrs. DFC. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Marrs.h… His Spitfire was shot down and he was killed. He is buried in Kerfautras Cemetery, Brest, France. Age 20.


Lost his life this day 24th. July 1940. FO. John Lawrence Allen. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/AllenJL… He was last seen making a controlled decent with a dead engine. His Spitfire spun in and he was killed. Age 24.


Lost his life this day 23rd. July 1941. PO. James Roland Gabert Sutton. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/SuttonJ… He was killed on a sweep over France. His Spitfire was shot down near St.Pol and he is buried there. Age 21.

Lost his life this day 23rd. July 1941. Sgt. George William Tabor. (2nd from right) One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Tabor.h… Killed when his Spitfire was shot down on a sweep in the commune of Ergny, NE of Montreuil. Age 21.

Born this day 23rd.July 1920. PO. Philip James Kearsey. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Kearsey… He was killed in his Hurricane defending Luqa airfield against a bombing attack. His body was never recovered. Age 20.


Born this day 23rd.July 1919. Sgt. Edward Laurence Byrne. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Byrne.h… Held at one time in Stalag Luft 3 at Sagan. He survived the War.


Born this day 23rd.July 1914. Sgt. Frantisek Antonin Bernard. AFC. Czech One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Bernard… He survived the War &returned to Czechoslovakia but, like so many ex-RAF airmen, he was purged by the communist government in 1948. He later emigrated to New Zealand
