Manufacturing growth driven by corporate units outpaces household units twofold, with 2.3 million jobs lost in the household sector as informal household manufacturing falls behind. Mainstream economics specializes in widening the gap between rich and poor, trapping the majority…

There has been a fair amount of interest around the surge in female entrepreneurship reported by recent household surveys. In their latest EPW article, Aloke Kar and @pcmohanan provide some context on what female entrepreneurs in manufacturing do (provide services to households):

India is not the 4th most equal country in the world. We re-did correct & comparable calculations: India ranks 176 (& not 4) out of 216 on income inequality. On calorie consumption inequality, it ranks 102 out of 185. I explain this in @thewire_in m.thewire.in/article/econom…
In this Mint article we raise a few issues for consideration in the forthcoming population census

Government just announced population count. As of now very little clarity on the content and process of data collection. We discuss a few issues.

Thanks to @cdpp_india - Today in Hyderabad, I participated in a thoroughly thoughtful panel discussion that covered: global geopolitical developments; global & national migration trends; the geopolitics of #climatechange; smart urban planning & architecture. @drausaf @pcmohanan

There's been a lot of discussion about whether the recent data on ⬆️ FLFPR is too good to be true. I examine this for @CedaAshoka triangulating data from multiple sources, & also comment on whether this📈 is "transformative" @pcmohanan @amitbasole @SonaldeDesai @_CMIE @_cphs
📈📈Is the recent increase in India's female labour force participation rate too good to be true? @_ADeshpande looks at data from the PLFS and other surveys/datasets to make sense of what the numbers mean, in our latest analysis. Read here: ceda.ashoka.edu.in/too-good-to-be…
Saddening to see irresp trashing of the NFHS. USAID is 1 of the partners. Its grants are under bilateral assistance that the Fin Min approves where Sanyal was a sr officer. NHFS is carried out by us. Under donor aid we get technical assistance. His tirade reflects another agenda
Two statements can be simultaneously true: a) #NFHS has a dark pre-history b) It has been one of India's most useful and transparent databases over the past 3 decades (1/n)
In this note we examine the concerns that recent increase in women's work participation rates are due to change in definitions and instructions to interviewers in PLFS. The findings discount this possibility.
Given the high degree of informality in the Indian economy, national employment surveys have drawn up complex instructions to capture all those who work. This however comes with the risk of misinterpretation & result in errors. Aloke Kar & @pcmohanan write theindiaforum.in/forum/rise-fem…
We give a brief review of poverty estimation based on the new household expenditure survey and issues arising from the new methodology adopted by NSS in recording consumption data.

As the year ends, I’m revisiting my story on delayed public datasets. The Census, the most crucial dataset, remains overdue. Experts highlight that many indicators now rely on estimates, not actual numbers. Outdated data affects everything from PDS to crime rates. #Census #data
