There is an interesting story shaping up this week in college sports: football coaches are diverging publicly from administrators and lawmakers. Coaches see the need for collective bargaining to bring sustainability to the game and give players a real voice:
Nearly each Big 12 coach told @YahooSports this week that they support employment/collective bargaining. RichRod: "How do you make a half million dollars and aren't an employee?" Our story from last week on the push to bring a CBA to college sports (but it's complicated) 👇
With Josh's death, football fatal EHS this decade has already surpassed all of last decade and on pace for the deadliest decade in the history of American football. @WeAreAFCA @NATA1950 @K_S_Institute @NFL how many dead are too many dead until you change your prevention paradigm?

atlantanewsfirst.com/2025/07/23/15-… In GA it's 'acclimatization week' with helmets only practices. Mikah was a lineman. We don't yet know Micah's cause of death, but we know acclimatization periods with uniform reductions are ineffective strategies in preventing football EHS.

Knowledge>Ignorance. Prevention>Treatment. Sickle cell trait status knowledge + targeted education + tailored precautions is protective in athletes, warfighters, fire/police recruits...in all people. tiktok.com/@sadguyraps/vi…
Maybe, 9 yrs after Maxwell Tchatchoua's football EHS, Penn Hills is abiding traditional, yet ineffective, EHS preventive strategies? Giving the benefit of the doubt, for now...but why are linemen sprinting? Time to embrace a new paradigm for prevention of football EHS! @NATA1950

The 4th football EHS this year. All, as yet, nonfatal. All are linemen. All were conditioning. Time to change how we train. @WeAreAFCA EHS is 100% preventable. It does not an occur in games and should not occur in training or conditioning. wpxi.com/news/local/pen…
Campers learned: Linemen are among the highest-risk athletes for exertional heat illness and exertional sickling. Their larger size and position-specific demands require tailored, safer training.
The first 50CAL Big Man Camp was a powerful day of strength, learning, and legacy. We’re so grateful to everyone who showed up, trained hard, and honored CJ with heart. Want to see photos and read more about what made this camp so special? Visit: incalvinshonor.com/post/honoring-…
From a respected AT: Our strength coach made changes for our bigs after reading 'Paradigm Shift' and those changes have paid off. This is the first summer we haven’t had any bigs truly struggle with conditioning. It’s a paradigm shift, but firsthand I can say it has paid off.

My heart breaks for my son and my family who came together today to visit CJs grave site. No parent should have to bury their child especially with out answers. #Amotherslove
nfhs.org/stories/nfhs-r… I support @NFHS_Org in this statement!
Jarvis Spires, TX, & Joshua Henderson, TN, in ICU due to football training, likely EHS. Both are linemen, as virtually all football EHS cases are. Prevention > Treatment. EHS is 100% preventable!! Until we change how we train, these will continue! @NATA1950 @WeAreAFCA @SWATAD6

No problem with this whatsoever. The portal is used more often than not to "run guys off." We saw this when the Colorado coach came to town. Nevertheless, the dominant narrative around the portal is that it is universally pro-player when that simply isn't the case. Structured…
Really hope reporters at the B1G preseason meetings ask every player in attendance their thoughts on the topic. Specifically, would players be willing to give up freedom of movement as part of a CBA?
The @CFBPAOfficial is ready to work with the coaches (and some administrators) who see the obvious path forward. Collective bargaining and power sharing, not a return to the past, are the solutions to sustainability and fairness in college football.

Collin Kelly, a lineman, struggled as he completed runs totaling 3,837 yds, or >2 ¼ miles. Instead of immediate withdrawal, the distressed are often ignored, exhorted to continue despite signs & symptoms, and complete the drill. He collapsed 7/6 and died of football EHS 7/7/15.

“That was CJ—humble, driven, full of promise.”
🎙️ Throwback to CJ being interviewed as a sophomore at Land O’ Lakes High School. He had just stepped out of the batting cage when someone from the Who’s On First podcast saw something special. That was CJ—humble, driven, full of promise. #LL50CAL #BucknellAlum #NCAAFootball…
14-year-old Mark Johnson, “a huge specimen of a kid,” ran 1.5 miles on July 5. He took a 15-min break. Then, in the series of 40-yd sprints, Mark collapsed on his 3rd. He died of football EHS three days later on July 8, 1984.
