Commentary on Irish political economy by Michael Taft, Researcher for SIPTU
Military expenditure among the combined EU countries is nearly three times that of Russia. So why are we being frog-marched into ramping up military expenditure at the expense of social programmes? Source: SIPRI Military Expenditure Database

Average CEO pay in large Irish publicly quoted companies rose by 31%. Average employee wage rose by approximately 4%. Increase in CEO pay rose nearly 8 times faster. This should be a political issue. What do Ireland’s best paid chief executives earn? irishtimes.com/business/2025/…
There is no economic case for giving the lowest paid sector of 16 (by far) an advantage like this Use the tax to directly hire Construction workers for social housing or retrofitting It's highly subsidised in other ways too (workers disproportionately in receipt of HAP etc)
Enterprise Minister Peter Burke has defended plans to cut VAT for the hospitality sector at a cost of €1 billion. jrnl.ie/6771209t
Yesterday, we learned that the proposed VAT cut for the hospitality sector will cost close to €1bn. That sector is growing, with more people working in it than one year ago. With so much economic uncertainty, why is the Government talking about a €1bn corporate handout?
The perfect example of what I mean when I've been saying: Zohran's communications style is only possible because of the substance.
Meet the New Centrist Democrat Copying Zohran Mamdani This is incredible @heycappello
Socialism is what they called public power. Socialism is what they called social security. Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations. Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people. —Harry Truman, 1952

If you’re an elected Dem (rightly) complaining about the GOP kicking 17m people off of Medicaid, now’s a good & credible time to critique the entire broken non-universal US healthcare system. Now is the time to call for universal healthcare/single payer, for Medicare for All.
We’re being told public spending is getting out of control. But Ireland is a low spender. We’d have to increase public expenditure by up to €15 billion just to reach EU averages. We need to significantly increase spending – and the revenue to pay for it: tinyurl.com/bdfpetw9

Always thought this was the case. Developers are bluffing when they say lower prices would undermine viability of house building irishtimes.com/business/2025/…
LIVE from Shreveport, Louisiana: Some people told me Louisiana was a conservative state. I guess not. Tune in to our rally in Mike Johnson's backyard NOW.
One reason (among many) to join the Raise the Roof Housing Protest today (June 17th) at the Dáil at 6:00 pm - Irish rents are the highest among comparable EU capital cities. They are more than 50% above average. And new Government policies will only increase rents further.

It's a big cost at half a BILLION euros, which would add to an already growing underlying deficit and put our public finances at further risk.
Today is 'No Kings Day' in America. Demonstrations in over 2,000 cities against the authoritarianism of Trump's rule are taking place. Solidarity with all those marching in the US and around the world for democracy and the rule of law.

Profit shifting. Tax avoidance. 0% corporate tax paid. Excellent investigation into Ireland's tax mirage and multinational accounting practices from the @businessposthq . Still, don't ever say that Ireland is a tax haven.

Opposition to postponement of Living Wage significant across the board: age, social class, region. Even most Fine Gael and Fianna Fail voters oppose postponement.

Considerable opposition to the government's proposed postponement of living wage and additional sick pay entitlements.

Union busting. It's called union busting. And it's f-ing disgusting thehill.com/homenews/admin…
